The Raid-Inspired Brutal Beat-’-Em-Up Acts of Blood Arrives on PC in December, Consoles to Follow

While massive gaming showcases like The Game Awards are traditionally dominated by sprawling, multi-million-dollar blockbusters, they also serve as a vital launchpad for exciting independent projects. Among the titles capturing attention over the past year is Acts of Blood, an uncompromising martial arts beat-’em-up that first turned heads during the Summer Game Fest. Drawing heavy inspiration from modern action masterpieces like The Raid and the high-octane vengeance sagas of John Wick, the game offers a visceral combat experience reminiscent of titles like Sifu, but dialled up significantly in terms of grit, violence, and environmental brutality.

Acts of Blood plot and gameplay details

At its core, Acts of Blood places players in the shoes of Hendra, a protagonist driven by a relentless desire for retribution. The narrative kicks into motion following a personal tragedy, forcing Hendra to fight his way through the bustling, dangerous streets of Bandapa, Indonesia. His mission: to dismantle and uncover the powerful, shadowy syndicate responsible for his family’s murder, leaving a trail of defeated adversaries in his wake.

The official story premise details a journey born out of institutional failure and personal loss: when justice fails, Hendra embarks on a quest for vengeance that takes him deep into the criminal underbelly of Bandapa. Along the way, players must learn, develop, and refine Hendra’s combat repertoire, unlocking punishing new moves and mastering various martial arts disciplines to survive waves of hostile opponents and intense boss encounters.

The project originated as a modest solo endeavor by developer Fajrul FN before gradually expanding as friends and fellow developers joined the effort, eventually evolving into the indie studio known as Eksil Team. Discussing the project’s mechanical and aesthetic foundations, Fajrul FN highlighted a deliberate blend of established genre mechanics and cinematic influences. The gameplay design merges the counter-based defense systems seen in titles like Sleeping Dogs with the layered, deliberate combo mechanics of Sifu. Visually and tonally, the team drew inspiration from dark, atmospheric thrillers like the Max Payne series and Manhunt, emphasizing an uncompromised, gritty atmosphere.

Martial arts serves as the fundamental pillar of the game’s mechanics, offering players a diverse array of strikes, defensive parries, and devastating finishing maneuvers. Beyond bare-knuckle fighting, the combat system heavily encourages improvisation. Players can seamlessly incorporate melee weaponry, seize firearms from enemies, and leverage elements of the surrounding environment to dispatch foes efficiently. According to the development team, the focus on unbridled violence is intentional, featuring brutal takedowns, dismemberment mechanics, and a specialized iteration of cinematic X-ray strikes designed to make every confrontation feel impactful and visceral.
