Embark Studios Details Long-Term Plans to Revitalize the Arc Raiders Endgame Ahead of the ‘Frozen Trail’ Update

It has been a tumultuous journey for Arc Raiders over the past year. Once sitting comfortably among Steam’s most dominant titles with a staggering peak of more than 480,000 concurrent players, the extraction shooter has experienced a noticeable decline in its active player base. Recent data from SteamDB indicates that the game now hovers around a daily concurrent population of roughly 25,000 players. While any live-service game experiences a cooling-off period after its initial launch window, the drop in Arc Raiders has reignited industry discussions regarding player retention, community engagement, and the critical need for a robust endgame.

According to player feedback and community sentiment, the primary driver behind the dwindling numbers is not a fundamental flaw in the core gameplay loop, but rather a lack of meaningful activities to pursue once players reach the upper echelons of progression. For months, veterans of the game have voiced their frustrations across forums and social media, pointing to a stagnant endgame that offers diminishing returns for those who have mastered its mechanical challenges.

To be sure, the game does feature formidable obstacles for high-level squads. Players can repeatedly seek out and challenge the Queen and the Matriarch—two colossal, mechanized threats that demand exceptional coordination, deeply optimized team compositions, and some of the rarest, most powerful weaponry available in the game. For solo players, these encounters are virtually insurmountable, requiring a dedicated squad to even stand a chance. However, once a well-coordinated team figures out the optimal strategies and masters these encounters, the novelty wears off. Without fresh incentives or evolving challenges, veteran players naturally begin to look elsewhere for entertainment.

Arc Raiders Is Finally Getting More Endgame Content

The alternative path for endgame engagement—engaging in player-versus-player (PvP) combat against fellow raiders—presents its own set of complications. While hunting other players can introduce a layer of dynamic, unpredictable challenge, it fundamentally alters the experience due to the game’s aggression-based matchmaking system. Engaging heavily in PvP shifts a player’s lobbies away from friendly or cooperative encounters, a design choice that many in the community find less appealing. This issue has been further exacerbated by persistent reports of cheaters populating PvP-focused lobbies, driving even more players away from the competitive side of the endgame ecosystem.

As Embark Studios prepares for the release of Frozen Trail, the game’s first major content update in six months, questions surrounding the longevity and future of the endgame have taken center stage. In an interview ahead of the update’s launch, Aleksander Grøndal, executive producer at Embark Studios, addressed whether the development team is fully aware of the community complaints concerning the lack of endgame content and outlined how the studio plans to respond.

According to Grøndal, the upcoming Frozen Trail update is designed to introduce fresh activities that will give players new ways to test their skills. "Frozen Trail will bring some new things to do, repeatable activities that they can do and challenge themselves in completely new ways," Grøndal stated. He emphasized that addressing player retention is not a one-size-fits-all challenge, noting that the studio views this as a long-term initiative tailored to a diverse player base with varying preferences.

"I think this is more of a longer-term initiative for us to try to capture," Grøndal explained. "What we see is that different players have different needs in this regard. Some players are perfectly happy to do what we have today with trials and expeditions, and they will continue doing that."

Conversely, the development team recognizes that a significant segment of the community desires entirely different experiences, particularly when it comes to player interaction and combat. Grøndal noted that many players currently feel there are insufficient incentives to actively pursue PvP encounters beyond the inherent thrill of the combat itself. Consequently, the studio’s strategic goal moving forward is to address those specific desires with tailored solutions rather than a generalized, catch-all fix that might alienate other segments of the player base.

"They don’t really feel like there are enough rewards for them to play PvP outside of just doing the PvP itself," Grøndal said, acknowledging the gap in current reward structures. "So our goal going forward is to address that more specifically. Based on different player needs, we need to have different solutions in place. A catch-all solution is probably not the right approach here."

While Frozen Trail is not intended to serve as an instant, definitive fix to every systemic issue plaguing the endgame, Grøndal confirmed that the update will represent a meaningful step in the right direction. Embark Studios has mapped out broader, long-term plans to continuously refine the experience. Furthermore, Grøndal clarified that solutions will not be bottlenecked exclusively behind massive, biannual content drops. Smaller updates arriving between major milestones will also incorporate targeted fixes and features designed to alleviate endgame fatigue.

As the community looks toward the horizon, anticipation is building to see how these upcoming changes will reshape the ecosystem. Arc Raiders is scheduled to receive the Frozen Trail update on Thursday, October 8, marking a crucial milestone for Embark Studios as they attempt to win back lapsed players and breathe new life into the title’s endgame.
