SoFi Technologies reported a robust set of financial results for the third quarter of 2026 earlier Tuesday, highlighted by a milestone performance in its expanding cryptocurrency division, which crossed the half-million product mark. The strong quarterly report, paired with an upward revision to the company’s full-year guidance, catalyzed a sharp positive reaction in the market. At the time of writing, SoFi shares were up 14.59% on the day, trading at $16.56.
The lender’s return to the digital asset sector has been closely watched by industry analysts and retail investors alike. SoFi originally re-entered the crypto investing arena in the fourth quarter of 2025, marking a significant regulatory milestone when it became the first U.S. nationally chartered bank to offer direct retail cryptocurrency trading to its customer base. Since that relaunch, adoption has steadily climbed, pushing the total number of crypto products to 503,070 by the close of the third quarter.
Despite the impressive growth in user adoption and product numbers, cryptocurrency operations currently remain a modest line item within the company’s broader financial ecosystem. During the third quarter, crypto transaction revenue totaled $161.6 million, but this was largely offset by the cost of revenue, which reached $160.0 million. Consequently, net crypto transaction revenue stood at a modest $1.6 million, accounting for approximately 0.1% of SoFi’s total net revenue for the period.
The underlying mechanics of the platform explain this narrow margin. SoFi earns a fee on each individual buy and sell order executed by its members, while the vast majority of the gross volume flows through as a direct cost. Looking at the broader performance over the first nine months of 2026, net crypto transaction revenue totaled $3.7 million against a substantial gross revenue figure of $417.5 million.
Internal data provided by the company reveals that member trading activity accelerated notably as the third quarter drew to a close, with September serving as a particularly active month. Members placed a total of 218,469 trades during September, representing a 14% increase compared to August, during which 191,359 trades were executed. A closer examination of the transaction types shows that buy orders saw stronger growth than sales. Buy trades rose by 18% to reach 133,937, while sell trades experienced a more modest 8% increase, totaling 84,532 transactions. In terms of monetary volume, buy orders accounted for $33.8 million, whereas sell orders reached $39.1 million.
High-net-worth engagement was also present on the platform, with members placing 25 individual trades valued at $100,000 or more during the month. Among the various digital assets available, Bitcoin maintained its dominant position, leading trading volume with a commanding 39% share. Much of the trading momentum was propelled by new participants entering the market. According to SoFi’s metrics, 44% of September traders executed their very first trade on the platform that month. Meanwhile, 20% of the active traders had utilized the platform previously but sat out the month of August, and the remaining 36% actively traded in both August and September.
Demographically, SoFi’s crypto user base leans heavily toward a younger audience. The company reported that 43% of its crypto-active members belong to the millennial generation, defined as individuals born between 1981 and 1996, bringing the median age of a SoFi crypto member to 36 years old. Beyond retail trading, the institution continues to expand its technological footprint in the digital asset infrastructure space. Notably, SoFi achieved a major fintech milestone by becoming the first national bank to go live with stablecoin settlement across Mastercard’s expansive global payments network.
SoFi’s monster quarter
While the digital asset division continues to capture headlines, SoFi’s broader financial performance for the third quarter exceeded consensus Wall Street expectations across multiple key metrics. On an adjusted basis, the company reported earnings of $0.18 per share, comfortably beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $0.17 per share and improving significantly upon the $0.11 per share reported in the same period a year earlier. Total net revenue reached $1.37 billion, coming in 9.08% above analyst consensus expectations and rising substantially from the $949.63 million recorded in the third quarter of the previous year.
This latest earnings beat continues a strong operational trend for the institution. SoFi has successfully beaten consensus earnings per share estimates in three out of the last four quarters, while consistently topping revenue estimates in all four of those reporting periods. Despite these strong operational fundamentals, the company’s stock has faced headwinds in the broader market context, falling 44.8% over the course of the year, while the benchmark S&P 500 index posted a 12.1% gain over the same timeframe.
Market analysts currently maintain a balanced outlook on the equity. Zacks presently rates the stock as a Rank #3, denoting a Hold rating, which signals that the stock is expected to perform generally in line with the broader market. Looking ahead to the final quarter of the year, analysts project earnings of $0.20 per share on $1.32 billion in revenue, with full-year expectations pegged at $0.60 per share on $4.87 billion in total revenue.
Originally established as an innovative student loan refinancing startup, SoFi has successfully transitioned over the years into a comprehensive, full-scale digital financial services platform. Today, its extensive product suite ranges from initial public offering (IPO) investing and credit cards to high-yield savings accounts, supporting a growing market capitalization of $21.5 billion.
