US Video Game Console Sales Suffer Historic Declines as PS5 and Xbox Numbers Plunge

Video game console sales in the United States have cratered significantly, with both Sony’s PlayStation 5 and Microsoft’s Xbox experiencing a massive drop in year-to-date sales through the end of August compared to the same period last year. The stark industry data highlights a challenging retail environment for current-generation hardware, signaling a potential shift in consumer purchasing habits, market saturation, or anticipation of future hardware iterations.

The figures were brought to light by Mat Piscatella, the prominent video game industry advisor at prominent market research firm Circana. Taking to his official Bluesky account, Piscatella shared the sobering metrics derived from Circana’s U.S. Retail Tracking Service, painting a difficult picture for major hardware manufacturers as the industry moves through the latter half of the year.

According to the data shared by the research firm, PlayStation 5 hardware unit sales have dropped by 25% year-to-date in the U.S. through August. This sharp decline places the console’s current sales volume at its lowest point since 2013. Historical context reveals that 2013 was a transitional year for the gaming industry, a period when consumers intentionally held off on purchasing PlayStation consoles in anticipation of the eagerly awaited arrival of the PlayStation 4. The parallel suggests that modern consumers may similarly be looking ahead to the next generation of hardware or experiencing a prolonged hardware adoption cycle.

Meanwhile, the situation for Microsoft’s Xbox is even more pronounced. Xbox retail figures have cratered by 33% year-to-date through August compared to the previous year. This steep decline pushes the brand’s sales numbers down to an all-time low since the original Xbox launched nearly 25 years ago. The historic low point underscores the mounting challenges Microsoft faces in the traditional hardware retail space, a sector where the company has increasingly emphasized digital ecosystems, subscription services like Xbox Game Pass, and cross-platform accessibility over traditional console unit sales.

The revelations from Circana’s tracking data arrive at a critical juncture for the video game industry. As hardware sales slow down dramatically, industry watchers and analysts are closely monitoring how manufacturers will respond to reverse the downward trend. Both Sony and Microsoft have heavily invested in bolstering their ecosystems, yet the physical retail market continues to face immense headwinds.

The significant drop in unit sales across both market leaders points to broader shifts within the consumer electronics and entertainment sectors. With inflation, changing consumer spending priorities, and the maturity of the current console generation, players are holding onto their existing hardware longer than in previous generations. As the year progresses toward the critical holiday shopping season, the industry will be watching closely to see if these historic lows mark a permanent plateau for traditional console hardware or merely a temporary valley in a shifting digital landscape.
