Wabi Raises $55 Million at a $1.25 Billion Valuation as AI Agent Race Heats Up

The high-stakes global race to build the defining artificial intelligence assistant of the next generation continues to attract staggering amounts of venture capital, with investors eagerly spreading out their financial bets across a rapidly diversifying ecosystem of startups. In the latest milestone for the sector, Wabi—an emerging AI application that now proudly describes itself as a "personal agent"—announced on Thursday that it has successfully secured $55 million in a fresh funding round, vaulting the startup into the coveted unicorn club with a valuation of $1.25 billion.

Founded by seasoned tech entrepreneur Eugenia Kuyda, who previously made waves in the industry as the founder of the popular AI companion startup Replika, Wabi originally launched with a distinctly different premise. In its earliest iterations, the platform focused heavily on empowering everyday users to build their own functional applications simply by typing text prompts, a concept that earned it early buzz as a kind of "YouTube of apps." However, as the fast-moving artificial intelligence landscape continued to evolve at a breakneck pace, the startup elected to alter its strategic trajectory.

Last month, Wabi officially announced a significant pivot, transforming itself into an advanced AI-powered messaging experience. Under this updated paradigm—frequently dubbed "Wabi 2.0" by its creators—the core idea is that the application functions as a comprehensive personal AI agent capable of dynamically building the specific user interfaces needed to get things done on the fly, entirely within a conversational messaging environment.

Rather than forcing users to navigate a cluttered myriad of separate, single-purpose software applications, the company suggests that Wabi can be deployed to instantly construct customized mini-apps tailored to a wide variety of daily tasks and personal projects. These practical use cases range from comprehensive meal planning and tracking local restaurants to planning intricate date nights, creating personalized fitness routines, and designing specialized trivia games to entertain friends and family, among many other possibilities.

This successful capital raise arrives at a time when the broader market for consumer-facing AI agents is exceptionally hot, capturing the intense imagination of both Silicon Valley venture capitalists and everyday consumers alike. The market’s appetite for ambitious agentic platforms was underscored just weeks prior when viral AI agent Instinct commanded widespread industry attention by pulling in a massive $1 billion Series C funding round at a soaring $10 billion valuation in September. Even niche consumer plays, such as Tolan—a startup that develops a distinctive, muppet-like AI companion designed to help people navigate the everyday complexities of modern life—managed to successfully snag $30 million in funding shortly before Wabi’s announcement.

Investors backing Wabi are betting heavily on Kuyda’s proven ability to anticipate cultural and technological shifts in how humans interact with artificial intelligence. Alex Lim, a general partner at IVP, which led the startup’s latest funding round, highlighted this perspective in a public statement regarding the investment.

"Eugenia has a unique sense for where AI is headed and a track record of great taste in building it," Lim said. "She has a clear vision for how people will interact with AI, one that goes far beyond the text box or command line. Wabi is the expression of that vision, and we’re thrilled to support her."

The impressive roster of financial backers participating in Wabi’s latest financing round further underscores the high level of confidence prominent industry leaders and institutional funds have placed in the company’s long-term vision. Alongside IVP, the round drew participation from major venture capital powerhouses including Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) and Forerunner, as well as strategic corporate backing from the Amazon Alexa Fund.

Additionally, a formidable cohort of high-profile angel investors contributed to the round, bringing a wealth of tech industry and cultural expertise. This group includes Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, former Yahoo! chief executive Marissa Mayer, former Twitter CEO Dick Costolo, and Alex Pall, one half of the globally renowned electronic music duo The Chainsmokers.

As Wabi deploys its newly acquired capital to scale its engineering efforts, refine its agentic capabilities, and expand its user base, the startup stands positioned as a notable contender in the ongoing battle to redefine the future of human-computer interaction.
