Valve Rolls Out Huge Update for Hero Shooter Deadlock as Game Hits All-Time Peak

Shortly after the update went live across servers, player engagement surged dramatically. According to data tracked by SteamDB, concurrent player counts for Deadlock surpassed 228,000 users, marking the highest peak the game has ever recorded since initial player testing began.

The surge highlights the enduring and growing appeal of Valve’s latest multiplayer project, even as the studio continues to treat the game as an active work-in-progress. Despite the massive influx of players and the substantial content drop, Deadlock remains in development without a formal, finalized release date, with the studio actively iterating on core systems based on ongoing community feedback.

Valve Provides an Update on Deadlock’s Progress

Alongside the rollout of the City Never Sleeps update, Valve issued a comprehensive development status report detailing the current trajectory of the project. According to the development team, the game is still nowhere near completion, and a full commercial release remains some distance away.

Reflecting on the development cycle, the team noted that following January’s "Old Gods New Blood" update, they evaluated the state of the game and concluded that significant work was still required on the core mechanics. Rather than shifting focus immediately toward the polish phases of game development—such as updating older hero artwork and refining visual fidelity—the studio chose to prioritize foundational gameplay improvements.

The Deadlock team explained that they have been working on a number of features in parallel, some of which finally made their debut in the City Never Sleeps patch, while others have been quietly developed over the past few months. These longer-term initiatives include progression systems and hero/hideout customizations. Valve noted that these particular features are intentionally being introduced early so they can be thoroughly tested, adjusted, and significantly modified based on direct player feedback ahead of the game’s eventual full launch.

Furthermore, the team acknowledged that they are experimenting with more speculative concepts. Depending on how ongoing playtesting proceeds—though results thus far have proven promising—these experimental additions could include large-scale item redesigns, entirely new item implementations, and alternate game modes designed to substantially expand the overall scope of the experience. Ultimately, the team expressed satisfaction with how Deadlock has progressed over the past few years, attributing much of that steady evolution to the robust and continuous feedback provided by the active player community.

What’s in Deadlock’s City Never Sleeps Update

The City Never Sleeps update brings a staggering amount of new content to the table, headlined by a meticulously designed New York City map. This new arena captures the distinct early-to-mid-20th-century aesthetic of the city that never sleeps, though rendered through a heavily stylized, atmospheric, and spooky lens that fits the unique dark-fantasy-meets-urban-noir identity of the game.

With the introduction of the New York map, traditional neutral creeps have been completely overhauled and replaced with inventive new entities known as Haunts. These creatures populate the map’s jungles and lanes, offering fresh tactical considerations, farming routes, and strategic objectives for teams to contest throughout matches.

In addition to the environmental overhaul, Valve has introduced six new heroes to the game’s roster, many of whom draw heavy thematic inspiration from the New York setting. The newly added characters include Nurse Harrow, Rat King, Solomon, Deadman Danny, Baba, and Violet.

Several of these new additions have already captured the attention of the community. The Rat King arrives accompanied by a pizza rat supplicant, while Solomon brings a brilliant, calculating demeanor as a competitive chess player. Another standout addition is Baba, a grandmotherly figure who can be found hanging out with pigeons—marking a unique milestone of elderly neighborhood representation within the hero shooter genre.

To engage the community further in the development process, Valve has integrated an in-game voting system allowing players to weigh in on which of the six newly introduced heroes will roll out into active rotation first.

More comprehensive details regarding patch notes, balance changes, and specific mechanics introduced in the City Never Sleeps update are available directly through the official Deadlock website.
