Universal Pictures has officially given the next installment in its decades-spanning adventure franchise a title and a definitive release date, setting the stage for what is shaping up to be a major cinematic event. Exactly one year from today, the 27-year-old franchise will make its triumphant return to the big screen. The upcoming sequel, now officially titled The Mummy: Book of the Dead, is scheduled to hit theaters on October 15, 2027.
The announcement brings a wave of excitement to fans who have followed the adventures of Rick O’Connell and the broader ensemble since the late 1990s. Beyond confirming the release window and title, the studio’s latest updates have illuminated several key details about the upcoming production, including the return of several legacy cast members and a shift in the timeline for the beloved characters.
Most notably, The Mummy: Book of the Dead will finally reunite Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz as Rick O’Connell and Evie Carnahan. Weisz memorably stepped away from the franchise prior to the third film, 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, which resulted in the role of Evie being recast with Maria Bello. The upcoming fourth film corrects that absence, bringing back the original dynamic duo that helped make the first two films global blockbusters.
Recent set photos have provided fans with early glimpses of the production, revealing a very stylish look for Weisz that strongly suggests Book of the Dead will take place in the late 1950s, advancing the timeline significantly from the 1930s setting of the original films. Additional set photographs have showcased Brendan Fraser sporting a rugged new look for the veteran adventurer Rick O’Connell, signaling that the characters have aged in real-time alongside their audiences.
However, despite these exciting visual reveals and the newly minted title, the official plot details remain tightly under wraps by Universal Pictures. The subtitle itself—Book of the Dead—offers a heavy narrative hint, directly connecting the upcoming movie to the ancient artifact used to resurrect the franchise’s most iconic antagonist, Imhotep.

Will The Mummy: Book of the Dead rehash Imhotep’s story again?
The first two films in the modern franchise centered squarely around Imhotep, the high priest cursed for eternity, and his repeated attempts to return to the world of the living. Because he was continually resurrected via the mystical Book of the Dead, the new movie’s title strongly implies that the character, or the terrifying legacy associated with him, will once again play a central role in the narrative.
Adding significant weight to that theory is the confirmed return of Oded Fehr as Ardeth Bay. In the lore of the franchise, Ardeth Bay leads the Medjai, a sacred order of warriors whose sole generational duty is to guard against the resurrection of Imhotep and ensure that he remains buried. If Ardeth Bay is back on screen, it stands to reason that a new threat involving the ancient priest is once again menacing the world.
Further fueling speculation about the returning cast of characters is the reported involvement of Kevin J. O’Connor, who is set to reprise his role as Beni Gabor, Rick’s treacherous former companion who seemingly met a grim fate in the first film. With Beni potentially back in the picture, fans are already theorizing whether the slippery opportunist survived his subterranean ordeal and is once again doing Imhotep’s bidding, or if an entirely new force has unlocked the ancient texts.
While Arnold Vosloo’s return as the iconic Imhotep has not yet been officially confirmed by Universal Studios, actor John Hannah—who plays Jonathan Carnahan—indicated earlier this year during a festival appearance that Vosloo would indeed be back for the fourth installment.
As production continues and the October 2027 release date draws closer, fans can expect official trailers and more concrete plot synopses to emerge. Until then, audiences have plenty of time to revisit the 1999 classic that started it all, celebrating nearly three decades of cinematic adventure as the countdown to The Mummy: Book of the Dead officially begins.
