Star Wars Zero Company Update 1.2 Adds Long-Awaited Campaign Modifiers and Difficulty Settings

Electronic Arts and developer Bit Reactor have released a substantial new update for Star Wars Zero Company, introducing a comprehensive suite of campaign modifiers, balance adjustments, and quality-of-life enhancements. Update 1.2 is available now across PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, giving tactical strategy fans a fresh incentive to dive back into the critically praised sci-fi title.

Since its launch in early September, Star Wars Zero Company has earned a reputation as a robust and deeply engaging tactical experience in the style of classic turn-based squad strategy games like XCOM. However, while the core gameplay loop resonated strongly with players, the initial release offered limited flexibility for subsequent playthroughs. Once players completed the campaign, replayability was constrained by rigid default settings.

The lack of post-launch adjustments initially left players seeking custom solutions through community-made mods to alter campaign parameters. These limitations stemmed largely from turbulent pre-launch conditions at Bit Reactor, which included significant developer furloughs prior to the game’s release. Fortunately, recent studio developments have begun to shift the trajectory of the title’s post-launch support. Bit Reactor successfully brought back a portion of its furloughed workforce earlier this month, paving the way for the development and release of Patch 1.2, which goes far beyond standard bug fixes and minor stability patches.

At the core of the new update is a robust collection of campaign modifiers designed to let players tailor the challenge of their tactical operations. These settings must be configured prior to launching a new campaign, as they cannot be toggled mid-game. Among the most impactful additions are overhauled injury and permadeath rules. In the base game, units enjoyed a high degree of durability, typically requiring three separate injuries within a single mission before facing permanent elimination.

Update 1.2 introduces official support for higher-stakes environments through options such as "Instant Death," which causes units to perish after sustaining just a single injury, and "Two Strikes," which shortens the threshold to two injuries. For players who prefer to retain the standard three-injury system, the update adds configurable static or escalating risks of death, introducing random probability checks whenever a unit is wounded on the battlefield.

Further expanding the customization options, the update allows players to alter character progression and tactical advantages. Users can now disable health increases tied to earning Focus Points, restrict cross-training mechanics for disliked squad pairings, and reduce the statistical advantages gained from utilizing specific attack types. One of the most notable tactical tweaks introduced in the patch is the "No Perfect Shots" modifier, which injects an extra layer of tactical unpredictability by capping the maximum hit probability for any attack at 99%, ensuring that absolute certainty is never guaranteed in the heat of battle.

Alongside these major campaign modifiers, Bit Reactor has implemented several targeted balance updates. The patch adjusts parameters to encourage frequent use of the Upgrade Facility and reins in the mobility of Cly’s Combat Jump ability, which was widely regarded by the community as overly dominant during early playthroughs. Additionally, quality-of-life improvements include the ability to bind the "Call For Backup" ability to a custom hotkey of the player’s choice.

The release of Update 1.2 also brings a sweeping array of bug fixes across all platforms, addressing performance stability, targeting mechanics, overwatch behaviors, cinematic pacing, and user interface elements. While Bit Reactor has not yet detailed a comprehensive roadmap for future content, the studio has teased that it plans to explore additional configurations for campaign modifiers in subsequent updates, signaling a promising future for the continued support of Star Wars Zero Company.
