Samsung has officially entered the growing open-ear audio market with the introduction of its first-ever clip-on wireless earphones, the Galaxy Buds On. Abandoning the traditional in-ear canal design that has defined its previous Galaxy Buds lineup, Samsung’s new model adopts a clip-on form factor that rests comfortably around the outer ear while leaving the ear canal entirely open.
The appeal of open-ear audio design is already well-established among outdoor enthusiasts and athletes who rely on situational awareness during workouts. By avoiding a tight seal inside the ear canal, users can comfortably listen to music, podcasts, or phone calls while remaining fully aware of their immediate surroundings, such as passing traffic, cyclists, and other urban or trail hazards. Recognizing this trend, Samsung has spent considerable engineering effort developing a device that combines ergonomic comfort with open-ear listening.

According to Samsung, the development of the Galaxy Buds On involved extensive anatomical research studying a wide array of different ear shapes. Using advanced computer simulations, engineers optimized the precise placement of both the internal speaker and the battery components. Furthermore, the design incorporates a larger contact area along the ear band, which is specifically engineered to distribute pressure more evenly across the ear. This thoughtful structural layout ensures that the earbuds remain securely in place during vigorous movement, making them exceptionally well-suited for running, intense workouts, and active daily routines.
Samsung’s timing for entering this specific hardware category aligns with broader shifts in the global consumer electronics market. According to recent market research data from Omdia, open-ear wearable shipments experienced a notable 12 percent year-over-year growth through the second quarter of 2026. This expansion stands in sharp contrast to the broader true wireless stereo (TWS) earbud market, which remained broadly flat with a slight two percent decline over the same period. Within the burgeoning open-ear category, clip-on designs have emerged as the dominant format, capturing an impressive 61 percent of total open-ear sales.
Despite their surging popularity, open-ear audio devices traditionally face two major technological challenges: maintaining adequate bass response and preventing sound leakage, which can allow nearby individuals to hear what the user is listening to. To address these hurdles, Samsung has integrated several proprietary audio technologies into the Galaxy Buds On. The earbuds utilize TwinBoost speakers alongside automatic volume adjustment software. Additionally, the device features an Audio Leakage Reduction system, which is explicitly designed to keep audio contained within the wearer’s personal space rather than spilling out into the surrounding environment.

Beneath the exterior, the Galaxy Buds On are powered by Qualcomm’s advanced Snapdragon S7 Gen 1 Sound Platform. Paired with a high-efficiency Class-D amplifier, the hardware enables the earbuds to deliver up to 9.5 hours of continuous music playback on a single charge, ensuring reliable all-day performance for active users.
Beyond audio reproduction and ergonomic design, Samsung has heavily integrated its Galaxy AI ecosystem into the new earphones to elevate everyday functionality. Users can interact with Gemini Live completely hands-free, streamlining conversational AI assistance on the go. The earbuds also support quick voice memo recording, allowing owners to capture sudden thoughts or notes and subsequently search through those recorded files using Bixby. Furthermore, the Galaxy Buds On incorporate intuitive gesture controls, enabling users to answer incoming phone calls, dismiss morning alarms, or check pending notifications simply by moving their head.
The Samsung Galaxy Buds On are scheduled to launch first in South Korea on October 27, carrying a retail price of KRW 299,000, which translates to approximately $220 USD. The initial release will be available in a classic black colorway, with a broader international rollout planned to follow in the near future. Regional pricing details and specific availability dates for global markets have not yet been officially announced by the company.
