Sam Altman-Backed Meanwhile Secures $37.5M Funding Round as Global Wealthy Turn to Bitcoin Life Insurance

Meanwhile, the pioneering life insurance company licensed to operate entirely in Bitcoin, has announced that it has successfully raised $37.5 million in a new funding round backed by its existing investors. The latest capital injection highlights the accelerating mainstream institutional interest in digital asset financial products, driven by families across international markets seeking alternative wealth-preservation strategies amid persistent global macroeconomic volatility.

The funding round was led by Bain Capital Crypto, with robust participation from a prominent roster of venture capital firms and strategic investors, including Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures, and Morgan Creek Digital. With this latest $37.5 million raise, Meanwhile’s total cumulative funding has now surpassed the $180 million mark. Notably, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is also among the company’s early and ongoing backers, reinforcing the startup’s technological alignment and high-profile backing.

According to the company, the fresh capital follows a significant surge in international demand for its bespoke Bitcoin-denominated life insurance policies. While the initial regulatory frameworks focused heavily on domestic markets, the current wave of adoption is primarily being driven by high-net-worth clients outside the United States, particularly across regions in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. These markets have increasingly turned to digital assets as a hedge against currency devaluation and global financial instability.

Zac Townsend, the co-founder and chief executive officer of Meanwhile, emphasized the unique market gap the company was created to solve. Wealthy families around the world already hold substantial portions of their net worth in Bitcoin, Townsend noted in a public statement. However, what these holders historically lacked was a fully compliant, regulated mechanism to pass those digital assets on to the next generation without running afoul of traditional estate planning hurdles.

Townsend explained that the impetus for the new funding came directly from financial advisors and brokers approaching the firm because their high-net-worth clients kept demanding compliant Bitcoin insurance products. This new round of funding will directly enable Meanwhile to scale its operations and keep pace with that soaring institutional and broker-driven demand.

The capital raise arrives on the heels of several major product developments for the firm. In early 2026, Meanwhile officially launched BTC Life 1-Pay, a single-premium whole life insurance policy specifically engineered to cater to high-net-worth individuals located outside of the United States. This innovative offering serves as the company’s second major product line, following the previous rollout of BTC 10-Pay, which was tailored specifically for United States taxpayers navigating complex domestic tax codes.

Under the terms of the BTC Life 1-Pay policy, a client pays a single, upfront premium entirely in Bitcoin and, in return, receives a guaranteed death benefit denominated in Bitcoin that lasts for the duration of their life. The underlying value of the policy grows in tandem with Bitcoin, and crucially, after the completion of the first policy year, the owner is granted the flexibility to borrow up to 90% of the policy’s cash value. This liquidity feature operates without a mandatory repayment schedule and is free from the threat of traditional margin calls, offering unprecedented financial agility for estate planning.

Furthermore, these policies are designed to be owned by individuals, trusts, or corporate entities. This structural versatility makes them exceptionally well-suited for complex international succession and estate planning, a domain where high-net-worth families have traditionally struggled to integrate volatile digital assets into legacy preservation structures.

Since the rollout of its international offerings, Meanwhile has aggressively expanded its distribution network, successfully signing agreements with 15 elite brokerage firms that serve wealthy families globally. These strategic partnerships span key financial hubs including Singapore, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates, and Switzerland. Among the prominent partners are Lioner, a comprehensive insurance, trust, and family office group with established operations in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Zurich, as well as the Apeiron Group, a specialized marketplace dedicated to high-net-worth life insurance solutions.

Justin Man, the chief executive officer of Apeiron Group, highlighted the shifting mindset among elite clients regarding digital assets. The market is reaching a critical turning point where wealthy clients are no longer just asking how to safely hold Bitcoin and other digital assets, Man noted. Instead, they are actively seeking guidance on how to strategically plan around those holdings and ultimately transfer that accumulated wealth seamlessly to the next generation.

The commercial momentum is visibly translating into strong financial performance for the startup. Meanwhile reported that its net long-term underwriting income has already surpassed the total figures recorded for the entirety of last year and remains firmly on an upward trajectory to more than double throughout 2026, though the private company opted not to disclose specific monetary figures.

Stefan Cohen, a partner at Bain Capital Crypto, praised the company’s unique operational framework and rapid scaling. Meanwhile has successfully engineered a business model that owns every layer of a regulated life insurer while building and executing it with the speed and agility of an artificial intelligence-enabled startup, Cohen remarked. The robust growth observed throughout the year clearly validates the underlying business model, and the firm is enthusiastic about participating in this follow-on investment round.

The institutional credibility of the enterprise is anchored by its primary operating entity, Meanwhile Insurance Bitcoin (Bermuda) Limited. The firm holds the distinction of being the very first Class IILT license holder granted by the Bermuda Monetary Authority. This regulatory milestone was achieved in July 2024 following an intensive two-year developmental period within the regulator’s specialized financial sandbox environment.

Operating under this strict regulatory umbrella, the insurer maintains its balance sheet, operational reserves, and fully audited financial statements denominated natively in Bitcoin. To ensure the highest standards of security and asset protection, all policyholder Bitcoin holdings are stored securely with regulated institutional custodians, bridging the gap between cutting-edge digital asset technology and traditional fiduciary accountability.
