Meta Open-Sources Its AI Agent Software to Let Makers Build Custom ‘Muse’ Hardware Gadgets

Meta is opening the door for hardware enthusiasts, makers, and DIY developers to build their own custom physical devices powered by the company’s newest artificial intelligence agent. Following the open-sourcing of the official code via a new software development kit on GitHub, the tech giant is inviting creators to integrate its AI technology directly into a wide variety of hardware projects, ranging from low-power microcontroller setups to fully featured auxiliary displays.

The initiative centers around the concept of "Muse gadgets," a new category of experimental, open-source devices that users can assemble and program on their own workbench. According to Meta, the newly released Muse gadget SDK allows developers to leverage off-the-shelf components, giving them the flexibility to program hardware like standard ESP32 microcontrollers or set up more robust environments using a Raspberry Pi.

To help jump-start the maker community, Meta has outlined several potential hardware projects that showcase the versatility of the SDK. Among the suggested implementations are loading the Muse AI agent onto a color E Ink display to act as a dynamic, low-power reminder and information hub, integrating the software into an HDMI stick to beam the AI interface onto a large living room television, or pairing the agent with a small touchscreen device to construct a custom peripheral resembling a DIY Muse Charm.

While the possibilities for customization are vast, Meta has adopted a cautious tone regarding the reliability and safety of building hardware from scratch. In its official documentation and developer guidelines, the company explicitly encourages creators to proceed at their own risk when connecting the AI agent to custom-wired displays, physical buttons, environmental sensors, actuators, and other electronic components commonly found on a hobbyist’s workbench.

In tandem with the release of the open-source software development kit, Meta is also making a physical piece of hardware available to the community. The company has manufactured a limited batch of a dedicated device called the Muse Home Link, created specifically to serve as a central bridge between the AI agent and a smart home environment. Nat Friedman of Meta Superintelligence Labs revealed that the company has produced 5,000 units of the Home Link gadget for distribution.

The Muse Home Link is designed to operate using community-built skills and integrations. Once set up, users can rely on the Meta AI agent to perform routine domestic tasks and physical interactions around the house. Depending on the user’s specific hardware setup and smart home configuration, the gadget can be programmed to turn on overhead lights, control household televisions, send digital documents to a connected printer, and execute a variety of other automated commands.

Interest in the physical hardware has already begun to pick up among developers and tech enthusiasts. Meta has opened a waitlist for the Muse Home Link, allowing interested individuals to secure a spot ahead of the initial shipping wave, which is slated to take place later this month.
