DC Studios Leads Unveiled: Josh Hutcherson and Mackenzie Davis to Star in Tom King’s ‘Mister Miracle’ Animated Series

As James Gunn continues to shape the foundation of the new DC Universe, a familiar strategy has come to light: adapting the celebrated comic runs of architect and writer Tom King. Following the transition of King’s acclaimed 2021 miniseries Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow into a feature film, the studio is setting its sights on another monumental work from the author’s bibliography. The acclaimed 2017–2019 comic book run Mister Miracle is officially making the jump to the screen as an animated series, and after months of quiet development, DC has finally revealed the actors chosen to helm the project.

In a wide-ranging interview with IGN, DC Studios co-head Peter Safran officially named the two lead actors attached to voice the central heroes of the upcoming series. Josh Hutcherson, widely known for his work in The Hunger Games franchise alongside a persistent footprint in internet culture and meme history, has been cast as the titular escape artist, Scott Free. Joining him is Mackenzie Davis, recognized for her standout performances in HBO’s Station Eleven and the holiday romantic comedy Happiest Season, who will take on the role of his fierce warrior wife, Big Barda.

Tom King, who recently lent his creative talents as a co-creator on the upcoming HBO series Lanterns, has taken on the massive writing assignment for the adaptation. King has penned all eight episodes of the Mister Miracle animated series himself. Speaking to the publication, Safran praised the scripts, describing them as absolute "dynamite."

"It’s a beautiful book and the adaptation is fantastic, so we’re excited about that," Safran noted during the interview, signaling high confidence from the studio regarding the direction of the project.

The Official Synopsis for the DC Show Is as Follows

The studio also offered a detailed glimpse into the narrative scope of the upcoming series, outlining the high-stakes, psychological, and cosmic hurdles that Scott Free and Big Barda will face. The official synopsis released by Warner Bros. and DC sets the stage for a sprawling interplanetary drama:

"No prison can hold him. No trap can contain him. He is Scott Free, the worldwide celebrity sensation known as Mister Miracle, and he is the greatest escape artist who ever lived. But can he pull off the ultimate trick – and escape death itself? Something has gone horribly wrong with the perfect life that Scott and his warrior wife Big Barda have built for themselves on Earth. With war raging between their home worlds of Apokolips and New Genesis, Scott’s cruel adoptive father, Darkseid, seems to have finally captured the Anti-Life Equation – the ultimate weapon that will give Darkseid total dominance over the universe. As the mountains of bodies on both sides grow ever higher, only Mister Miracle can stop the slaughter and restore peace. But the terrible power of the Anti-Life Equation may already be at work in his own mind, warping his reality, exposing his long-buried pain, and shattering the fragile happiness he’s found with the woman he loves. And so begins the odyssey of Scott Free, Mister Miracle: a harrowing, hilarious, heart-wrenching journey across the pitfalls of the ordinary and extraordinary as the son of God raised by the devil tries to save his family, his world, and maybe even himself."

Warner Bros. and DC Are Committed to The Batman Part 2

Beyond the exciting casting announcements and production updates surrounding the broader DC television slate, Safran also took the opportunity to address ongoing fan anxieties concerning the cinematic side of the brand, specifically Matt Reeves’ highly anticipated The Batman Part 2. Production on the sequel hit an unexpected speed bump earlier this month when director Matt Reeves temporarily stepped away from the project to tend to an urgent family matter.

Because there has been no official word on when filming is scheduled to resume, industry speculation and fan concern began to mount, with some questioning whether the long-delayed sequel might face further setbacks or potential shelving. When pressed directly by IGN on whether there is any realistic scenario where filming fails to resume, Safran offered a swift, definitive response, succinctly shutting down any speculation with a firm "No."

This absolute reassurance from the studio co-head echoes recent public statements made by the film’s star, Robert Pattinson. While walking the red carpet for his new feature film Primetime, Pattinson addressed the production pause directly, offering a calm and reassuring message to concerned fans by emphasizing that the creative team is fully dedicated to the project and "going to figure it all out."

In addition to these major updates, Safran touched upon other smaller developments currently moving through the pipeline at DC Studios. He confirmed that early development is actively underway for an Absolute Batman animated television series, with comic writer Scott Snyder currently hard at work drafting the scripts. Meanwhile, DC Studios co-head James Gunn has not yet formally announced what his next feature-length directorial project will be, though Gunn has previously noted to fans that he has already begun the process of writing something entirely new.
