Brax Technologies, the hardware company recognized for developing the BraX3 smartphone and the open_slate tablet, has officially opened pre-orders for its latest privacy-centric device, the Wink. Following its initial presentation by company co-founder Rob Braxman—widely known across the web as "The Internet Privacy Guy"—at a roadmap event last month, the company launched pre-orders last week with plans to fulfill shipments across two distinct batches next year.
The introduction of the Wink marks another step forward for Brax Technologies in its ongoing mission to offer consumers alternatives to mainstream mobile ecosystems that rely heavily on data collection and cloud tracking. The device is engineered from the ground up to cater to users who prioritize data sovereignty, absolute control over their hardware, and secure, encrypted communication channels over convenience-driven data harvesting.

The Privacy Features
At the core of the Wink’s privacy architecture is BraxOS, a customized, Android-based operating system designed explicitly without Google services. Unlike standard Android builds that integrate background telemetry and framework dependencies, BraxOS operates free from Google account sign-ins and Google Play Services. Despite this departure from the mainstream Android framework, Brax Technologies notes that the vast majority of standard Android applications will still run smoothly on the device. The primary exceptions are applications that strictly rely on Google’s hardware-level integrity services to boot up, a category that includes select high-security banking apps.
Hardware-level control is another defining characteristic of the Wink. The mobile communicator features a dedicated physical switch located on the top edge of the device. This hardware toggle can be configured by the user to instantly shut off the camera, microphones, location services, internal sensors, or the mobile network entirely, providing a tangible, failsafe method to ensure no ambient data is being captured or transmitted without consent.

When setting up the device for the first time, users are given the choice between two distinct operational modes: Omni and Zero. Omni provides a fuller Android experience for those who need access to a wider variety of applications, while Zero strips the operating system down to its absolute essentials. In Zero mode, the functionality is restricted strictly to encrypted messaging, voice calls, standard text messages, and optional navigation tools, effectively transforming the device into a hardened communication tool.
Security against physical compromise has also been heavily emphasized in the software design of BraxOS. The Wink is equipped with automated self-wipe triggers that can be customized by the user prior to use. These triggers can execute a complete data wipe under specific high-risk conditions, such as upon every device restart, after a prolonged stretch in a powered-off state, following a series of repeated failed unlock attempts, or when a designated duress password is entered.

For transparency and community auditing, Brax Technologies has committed to providing long-term software support, promising updates for the Wink until the year 2032. Furthermore, the company has made the underlying operating system accessible to the public, allowing anyone to build BraxOS directly from source files available within the official BraX3 repositories.
Getting the Device
The rollout of the Wink is being handled through a structured pre-order model split into two separate batches, with each batch strictly capped according to the total number of units currently slated for production. This batch-based manufacturing approach ensures that supply closely matches verified demand while managing production logistics for the emerging hardware developer.

To secure a device, buyers participate through a deposit system. According to the company’s terms, the deposit amount remains fully refundable until the remaining balance on the order is paid in full. Additionally, customers retain the flexibility to change or cancel their reservations while their orders remain in the active reservation stage. Brax Technologies has noted that shipping schedules remain subject to change, and reservation holders will be notified via email regarding any timeline adjustments prior to the final payment due date.
Every retail unit of the Wink is packaged with a physical keyboard, a standard USB-C charging and data cable, and a translucent protective case. As interest in alternative, de-googled mobile hardware continues to grow within privacy-conscious tech communities, the Wink joins a wider ecosystem of niche hardware projects, such as modular open-source communication devices, offering users distinct pathways away from traditional consumer electronics paradigms.
