Blockstream, a prominent force in the Bitcoin technology and infrastructure sector, has officially launched a dedicated consulting business tailored specifically for financial institutions. Alongside this strategic business expansion, the company has established a new physical office in Lugano, Switzerland. This dual development marks a significant step forward for the firm, providing traditional banks, asset managers, and other institutional players with direct, hands-on access to Blockstream’s elite engineering teams and robust Bitcoin infrastructure solutions.
The newly formed initiative, operating under the banner of Blockstream Consulting Services, has been designed to support institutions through every critical phase of adopting decentralized financial systems. This includes comprehensive guidance during the evaluation, architectural design, and ultimate implementation of Bitcoin-based financial infrastructure. According to the company, the consulting arm will actively develop specialized solutions for tokenized asset issuance, confidential settlement systems, and other necessary underlying infrastructure. Furthermore, the scope of these services is expansive, spanning technical strategy, complex system architecture, and hands-on integration and implementation.
From its new operational base in Lugano, Blockstream plans to extend its reach and serve clients across the entire Swiss market, including major financial centers such as Zurich, Geneva, and Zug. The company has designated the Lugano office to serve as the primary strategic hub for its broader European operations. In this capacity, the office will foster client relationships, forge strategic partnerships, and encourage close collaboration with the region’s vibrant financial and technology communities.
The decision to anchor its European expansion in Switzerland was driven by the country’s unique economic and regulatory landscape. Peter Bain, the chief marketing officer of Blockstream, emphasized the strategic importance of the region in a statement regarding the launch.
"Switzerland is an important market for Blockstream given its longstanding banking tradition and supportive regulatory framework for digital assets," said Bain. "We look to provide regional expertise in markets where we see demand for Bitcoin infrastructure. Our consulting business, combined with our new office in Lugano, will bring tailored Bitcoin solutions to financial institutions across Europe."
Founded a decade ago in 2014, Blockstream has built a reputation for developing pioneering technology and services spanning Bitcoin custody, settlement, payments, asset issuance, and self-custody solutions. Its extensive product ecosystem includes the Liquid Network sidechain, Elements, Simplicity, Core Lightning, the Jade hardware wallet, and the Blockstream App. The company has maintained an active pace of development and innovation. Earlier this year, Blockstream successfully launched Simplicity smart contracts on the Liquid Network and introduced native Lightning Network support to the Blockstream Jade hardware wallet.
Bitcoin Adoption by Financial Institutions
Drawing directly upon a decade of foundational engineering experience, the new consulting business leverages deep institutional capabilities in advanced cryptography, protocol engineering, security, and financial technology. By utilizing multidisciplinary teams, Blockstream aims to grant financial institutions seamless access to its technical staff, guiding them expertly from initial technological evaluation all the way through to full-scale deployment.
The integration of Bitcoin into traditional financial frameworks represents a natural evolution for the industry, a sentiment echoed by the company’s leadership. Adam Back, the co-founder and chief executive officer of Blockstream, noted that bridging the gap between legacy systems and decentralized architecture is the logical path forward.
"The next phase of Bitcoin adoption is its integration into existing financial systems," said Back. "Our extensive experience in Bitcoin cryptography, protocol development and engineering gives Blockstream the technical expertise to address the complexities of integrating Bitcoin into traditional financial infrastructure."
Blockstream framed this strategic corporate move as an extension of its long-term commitment to the Swiss market, while simultaneously advancing a broader corporate strategy focused on establishing a strong physical and operational presence in key global financial centers to support institutional Bitcoin adoption.
Switzerland has steadily solidified its reputation as a leading global hub for digital asset and blockchain firms. This reputation is anchored by locations such as Zug’s renowned "Crypto Valley" and supported by a progressive regulatory framework that explicitly permits domestic banks to securely hold and trade bitcoin on behalf of their clientele.
While specific financial terms, including pricing structures, the initial headcount for the newly established Lugano office, and the identities of early consulting clients, were not disclosed during the announcement, Blockstream confirmed that the Lugano office is fully operational. The firm added that its comprehensive consulting engagements are immediately available to financial institutions throughout Europe.
