Marvel Officially Announces New Disney Plus Series ‘Zodiac’

The newly announced series, titled Zodiac, was confirmed by Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios’ head of streaming, television, and animation. Speaking to an enthusiastic crowd at the convention, Winderbaum revealed that the project is officially scheduled to premiere on Disney Plus in 2028. According to Marvel Studios, Zodiac will be developed as a spy thriller, leaning into the grounded, covert-ops style of storytelling that has previously driven successful MCU properties like Captain America: The Winter Soldier and the Disney Plus series Secret Invasion.

Production on the ambitious new series is slated to begin in the spring of 2027, with filming taking place in London. Winderbaum also noted that casting efforts are currently underway behind the scenes as producers assemble the ensemble cast for the espionage drama.

While specific plot details remain tightly under wraps, the title immediately drew attention from comic book fans familiar with Marvel lore. In the source material, the name "Zodiac" refers to a variety of criminal syndicates and organizations whose members pattern their identities after the signs of the Western zodiac. Traditionally led by a figure using the moniker Taurus, these syndicates have long served as formidable adversaries to mainstream heroes like the Avengers and the intelligence agency S.H.I.E.L.D.

Eagle-eyed fans analyzing the initial presentation materials pointed out potential hints within the show’s typography. The title treatment for Zodiac appears to feature an "O" styled after the circular zodiac wheel alongside an "A" that cleverly incorporates the eagle graphic historically associated with the S.H.I.E.L.D. logo. Whether this signals a direct adaptation of the classic criminal organization, an original espionage narrative, or a connection to classic spy networks within the MCU canon remains to be seen.

Further complicating and enriching the potential narrative scope, Marvel Comics history features another notable iteration of the Zodiac. In that particular storyline, the mantle of Aries was assumed by none other than Leonardo da Vinci. This historical figure assembled a secret leadership collective comprising prominent figures from major clandestine organizations, including Hydra, S.H.I.E.L.D., and the Hand. Their mission was to track down and recover a series of extraordinarily powerful artifacts. That sprawling narrative web included familiar comic characters such as Nick Fury, his younger brother Jake Fury, Dum Dum Dugan of the Howling Commandos, Baron Strucker, and Daniel Whitehall, along with the Hydra agent known as Kraken. How much, if any, of this rich comic history might influence the upcoming television adaptation will likely be revealed as production approaches.

The announcement of Zodiac arrives at a fascinating time for Marvel Television, a division that has undergone significant strategic evaluation and restructuring over the past several years. After launching an unprecedented wave of high-budget live-action streaming series at the dawn of the Disney Plus era, Marvel significantly scaled back its output to focus on quality, creative retooling, and sustainable production timelines.

That shift has led to some unexpected scheduling turbulence for fans. Earlier this year, Marvel generated headlines by initially announcing a second season for the upcoming Disney Plus show Wonder Man, only to shock the fan community by canceling the renewal just a few months later. Furthermore, long-awaited subsequent seasons or follow-up projects for popular heroes featured in earlier streaming series—such as Moon Knight, Hawkeye, and Ms. Marvel—have remained absent from recent release schedules, prompting speculation across the industry that Marvel might be stepping away from live-action television altogether.

However, studio leadership has consistently pushed back against the narrative that live-action television is being abandoned. Upcoming releases demonstrate a continued, albeit more measured, pipeline of content. The third and final season of Daredevil: Born Again is scheduled to debut next year, while another highly anticipated live-action project, VisionQuest, is slated to arrive on Disney Plus shortly. Industry insiders indicate that despite the shifting landscape, the Marvel Television group currently maintains between three and five live-action shows in active development, pointing to a steady, deliberate approach to expanding the universe on the small screen.

Alongside its live-action endeavors, Marvel Television continues to lean heavily into its robust animation slate. The studio’s animation division has several major projects lined up for Disney Plus subscribers in the near future. This includes the second season of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, which is scheduled to premiere in January. Additionally, the studio has confirmed that a third season of the acclaimed revival X-Men ’97 is deep in the works, alongside a trio of stand-alone Marvel Zombies specials that are set to expand the darker, alternative corners of the animated Marvel universe.

With casting underway for Zodiac and a targeted premiere window set for 2028, Marvel Studios is laying the groundwork for the next phase of its television storytelling. As production in London draws closer, fans will undoubtedly be watching closely for further updates regarding the cast, plot details, and the creative team behind the upcoming spy thriller.
