The prominent pirate streaming application MovieBox has surged past 300 million downloads on the Palm Store, the native app marketplace preinstalled on millions of mobile devices manufactured by Transsion. This explosive growth has placed the application squarely in the crosshairs of major international rightsholders, who have officially flagged the operation to the European Commission as part of a broader crackdown on digital intellectual property infringement.
The widespread availability of the app across popular smartphone brands including Tecno, Infinix, and itel has become a major concern for the entertainment industry. While the application has long operated in the digital shadows, its massive distribution network and alleged ties to corporate infrastructure have now elevated the dispute to regulatory authorities in Europe, drawing fierce opposition from Hollywood studios and European broadcasters alike.
The journey of MovieBox to regulatory scrutiny has been marked by persistent adaptation in the face of legal pressure. Last year, Nigeria’s copyright watchdog celebrated the high-profile suspension of MovieBox.ng, a pirate streaming portal that had successfully drawn tens of millions of monthly visits from eager users across the region. Despite the enforcement action taken against its primary African web domain, the operators behind the service proved resilient. As reporting revealed at the time, the site swiftly migrated to a new web address to maintain its operations, while its dedicated Android application remained widely available for download through various distribution channels.
However, the scale of the operation has now drawn intense scrutiny far beyond West Africa, landing firmly on the radar in Brussels. In formal submissions prepared for the European Commission’s upcoming 2027 Counterfeit and Piracy Watch List, both the Motion Picture Association and major French pay-TV group Canal+ formally identified MovieBox as a massive, industrial-scale piracy operation that demands immediate international attention and coordinated regulatory action.

Exploding Download Figures and Rapid Expansion
Both major rightsholders highlighted the exact same primary distribution channel as the key driver behind the application’s unprecedented reach. In its comprehensive overview of illicit mobile applications, the MPA noted that MovieBox had already amassed more than 243 million downloads exclusively from the Palm Store platform.
Palm Store functions as the proprietary app distribution marketplace that comes preinstalled directly on Tecno, Infinix, and itel smartphones. These three prominent mobile brands all operate under the umbrella of Chinese consumer electronics manufacturer Transsion, a dominant force in emerging markets that successfully accounted for 61.5% of all mobile phone sales across the African continent in 2024, according to the company’s own official corporate filings.
Canal+ provided even deeper analytical detail regarding the application’s trajectory following regulatory crackdowns. The French broadcaster noted that MovieBox successfully transitioned its web operations to a new domain following enforcement actions against its previous Nigerian web address in 2025. According to Canal+, the application continued its aggressive expansion unabated even after this domain switch, demonstrating remarkable resilience against anti-piracy measures.
The underlying platform remains fully operational today, and the dedicated mobile application has more than doubled its total download count in a remarkably short span of less than a year. Highlighting this exponential trajectory, Canal+ noted in its regulatory submission that Palm Store metrics recorded approximately 243.3 million application downloads by mid-June 2026, representing an astounding growth rate of roughly 108% since August 2025. Furthermore, the application consistently maintained its position as the number one ranked software in the Entertainment category on the Palm Store marketplace throughout this period.

These figures, however, have already been eclipsed by subsequent data. At the time of reporting, public listings on the Palm Store platform indicate that MovieBox downloads have climbed to an astonishing 305.6 million. This represents an additional surge of more than 60 million installs in a span of less than four months, highlighting a continuous and accelerating influx of new users.
The commercial presentation within MovieBox’s official store listings leaves little ambiguity regarding its core offerings, aggressively promoting unauthorized access to movies, television series, and live sporting events. Promotional descriptions explicitly promise users free access to live sports streams directly within the application, featuring specific promotional callouts highlighting Europe’s top five premier football leagues. Furthermore, the application’s official promotional artwork openly utilizes copyrighted imagery, including prominent intellectual property and brand categories associated with major Hollywood entertainment entities such as Marvel and Disney.
Transsion’s Ecosystem and Direct Corporate Links
The involvement of the Palm Store brings the underlying hardware manufacturer into the center of the debate. Palm Store operates as a closed, proprietary marketplace rather than an independent third-party app repository. In a detailed draft prospectus prepared for a planned public listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, Transsion explicitly describes the marketplace as its own internal app distribution platform, which successfully averaged more than 180 million monthly active users over the course of the previous year.
The same corporate prospectus outlines the commercial mechanics of the marketplace, noting that Transsion typically monetizes its platform by charging third-party developers based on the total volume of software installations processed through its distribution infrastructure. Whether this specific transactional revenue-sharing model directly applies to the massive distribution of MovieBox remains publicly unconfirmed.

Merely hosting an application within an app store does not automatically imply direct operational involvement by the marketplace owner. However, Canal+ suggested in its regulatory filing that the operational and technical ties connecting the piracy platform to the broader corporate ecosystem run significantly deeper than standard store hosting.
According to Canal+’s submission, MovieBox has maintained close operational connections to the Transsion and Transsnet ecosystem. Historical domain registration records associated with the early domains of the service allegedly uncovered registration details linked directly to Transsion. Additionally, technical security analyses conducted on the Android application revealed digital certificates signed under the Transsion corporate name, alongside explicit technical references pointing toward infrastructure and services owned and operated by Transsion.
While the detailed submission does not publicly elaborate on the precise contents of these registration records or security certificates, it stops short of explicitly alleging that Transsion directly owns or operates the MovieBox streaming service.
To clarify the developer of record, Canal+ pointed toward a Hong Kong-registered entity known as Excellent Innovation Limited. This corporate entity is connected to MovieBox through a network of overlapping domain registrations, SSL security certificates, developer attributions, and trademark filings. Notably, the Palm Store listing for the application officially designates this same Hong Kong company as the primary developer responsible for the software.

Meanwhile, the MPA submission takes a slightly different approach, omitting any direct mention of Transsion. The prominent Hollywood advocacy group merely observes in its documentation that the MovieBox operation is widely believed to be managed and orchestrated primarily out of China.
The dispute also highlights distinct commercial pressures within the affected regions. Canal+ maintains a direct financial and strategic interest in combating regional piracy through its ownership stake in MultiChoice, the dominant pay-TV corporation operating DStv across many of the exact same African markets where Transsion devices achieve market saturation.
Regulatory Response and Upcoming Watch List
Despite the extensive documentation provided by rightsholders, neither of the formal regulatory submissions indicates whether formal notices or takedown requests have yet been delivered directly to Palm Store or Transsion management to demand the removal of the infringing software.
Before the European Commission arrives at any final determinations regarding the composition of its upcoming publication, the commercial services named in the petitions will be granted a formal opportunity to present their perspectives. The consultation guidelines governing the watch list process explicitly state that the European Commission will make reasonable administrative efforts to contact the specific service providers cited in the submissions, formally inviting them to submit written responses addressing the allegations levied against them.

The final Counterfeit and Piracy Watch List is anticipated for public release in the spring of next year. Commission officials have repeatedly emphasized that inclusion on the watch list does not constitute a formal legal finding of wrongdoing, nor does it serve as definitive confirmation of statutory violations under European law. Instead, the initiative functions primarily as a diplomatic and regulatory tool designed to encourage commercial operators, platform administrators, and national governments to take proactive cooperative action against large-scale intellectual property infringement.
