Zcash Activates NU7 Network Upgrade on Testnet Ahead of Planned Mainnet Rollout

Zcash has officially activated its highly anticipated NU7 network upgrade on the testnet, successfully transitioning the planned protocol changes into a live testing environment approximately one month prior to its targeted mainnet deployment.

According to data from the Zcash testnet block explorer ZecBlock, block 4,465,026—which served as NU7’s designated and scheduled activation point—was successfully mined on Oct. 4 at precisely 18:21:45 UTC. The core Zcash development and governance entity quickly confirmed the milestone to the broader community, publishing a formal confirmation on the social media platform X to announce that NU7 was officially live and operational on the testnet.

The NU7 deployment represents the next major network upgrade for the privacy-focused cryptocurrency ecosystem. It aims to introduce several foundational protocol changes, most notably reducing the network’s target block spacing from the current 75 seconds down to a much faster 25 seconds. In addition to accelerating transaction processing and confirmation times, the upgrade introduces structural modifications that disable legacy version 4 transactions while integrating a specialized Network Sustainability Mechanism. This new economic feature is designed to automatically redirect a designated portion of standard transaction fees directly into future block rewards, altering the long-term emission and sustainability dynamics of the network.

However, the impending disabling of version 4 transactions carries significant implications for certain long-term holders. Specifically, any native ZEC cryptocurrency currently held within Zcash’s legacy Sprout shielded pool will become entirely unspendable unless users take proactive measures to move their funds before NU7 fully activates on the mainnet. This technical transition makes the current testnet phase critical for ecosystem participants to identify potential friction points and ensure legacy assets are properly managed.

Following the successful block generation, the Zcash Foundation released a statement advising testnet operators and community validators to utilize the latest release candidate to test NU7 thoroughly under real-world operational conditions. This preliminary testing phase serves as an essential sandbox environment, allowing core developers, node operators, and infrastructure providers to assess the stability, performance, and security of the upgrade before deciding whether to proceed with the final mainnet activation.

Zcash developers are officially scheduled to make a final decision regarding the mainnet activation and establish its definitive activation height on Oct. 20. This decision will be informed directly by the real-world performance data and operational experiences gathered from running NU7 on the testnet throughout the month. Subject to final review and consensus among stakeholders, the official mainnet activation of the NU7 upgrade is targeted for Nov. 5.
