Strategy Reports Record $20.91 Billion Q3 Operating Income Driven by Bitcoin Gains as CFO Steps Down

Strategy has announced the largest operating income in its corporate history, booking a staggering $20.91 billion for the third quarter of 2026. The vast majority of this unprecedented financial milestone was generated by a massive paper gain on the company’s extensive bitcoin holdings, highlighting the profound impact that cryptocurrency market movements continue to have on corporate balance sheets in the digital asset era.

Alongside the record-shattering operational performance, net income reached $19.53 billion, or $44.75 per diluted share, marking a dramatic increase from the $2.79 billion, or a significantly lower per-share figure, recorded during the same period a year earlier.

Chief Financial Officer Andrew Kang, who concurrently announced his departure from the company in the same earnings release, framed the results plainly, emphasizing the historic nature of the quarter. "Q3 operating income of $21 billion was the largest ever in Strategy’s history," Kang noted in the company’s official communication.

Because Strategy marks its bitcoin treasury to market at the conclusion of each quarter, every upward or downward price fluctuation flows directly into the company’s reported earnings. Bitcoin experienced a notable rally during the third-quarter period, directly bolstering the firm’s financial statements. The company’s massive stack of 848,517 bitcoin was valued at an impressive $68.9 billion as of October 23, calculated at a time when the token traded at $81,200. These cumulative holdings carry an average acquisition cost of $75,446 per coin, placing the massive treasury firmly in the black on a paper basis.

Reflecting on the strategic accumulation of digital assets, Kang pointed to the ongoing purchases as the primary economic engine of the quarter. He noted that the firm successfully "increased our bitcoin holdings by 26% year-to-date in a challenging bitcoin market," demonstrating continued institutional commitment to the asset class despite broader market volatility.

While the headline operating income figures reached historic highs, traditional business metrics presented a more nuanced picture of the quarter. Total revenue fell 3% from the same period a year ago, coming in at $125.4 million and missing consensus analyst estimates, which had anticipated revenue of $127.2 million. Gross profit was reported at $89.6 million, maintaining a strong 71% gross margin compared with the 70% margin recorded a year earlier. Strategy fortified its liquidity position, closing out the month of September with $2.50 billion in cash and cash equivalents alongside $3.40 billion in short-term investments.

Strategy’s Bitcoin Per Share Slips

Despite the massive surge in total paper value and operating income, the metric that management traditionally utilizes as its primary internal yardstick—bitcoin per share—moved in the opposite direction during the quarter. The company’s BTC yield stands at a negative 3.7% for the year to date, indicating that each individual share currently holds a slightly smaller fraction of bitcoin than it did at the beginning of January.

Measured strictly in dollar terms, the company’s bitcoin position shows a $2.03 billion loss over the exact same period. To fund ongoing preferred dividends and corporate stock buybacks, Strategy has found it necessary to sell roughly $431.8 million worth of bitcoin over the course of the year, a figure explicitly confirmed in the company’s official financial release.

During 2026, Strategy successfully raised $21.23 billion in total capital, which included $5.41 billion in net proceeds generated exclusively through its at-the-market equity program during the third quarter alone. A substantial portion of this freshly raised capital was subsequently deployed to repurchase the company’s own preferred stock. Specifically, Strategy repurchased 20,980,508 shares of its STRC security for $2.04 billion, paying an average price of $97.39 per share, which represented a favorable discount to the $100 stated amount.

Chief Executive Phong Le addressed the aggressive buyback initiative, explaining that the program was explicitly designed to put the security on a firmer financial footing. "Strategy demonstrated its commitment to returning STRC to health," Le stated. Management further indicated an intention to continue purchasing shares for as long as STRC trades below its par value, with approximately $956.7 million still remaining authorized under the current buyback program.

The company’s total dollar reserves now stand at an imposing $5.07 billion, comprised of a $4.83 billion USD Reserve and $242.4 million in USD Cash. According to corporate disclosures, this substantial financial cushion is projected to comfortably cover approximately 3.4 years of anticipated dividend and interest obligations. To maintain stability, the board of directors opted to keep the STRC dividend rate steady at 12.00%, a measure designed to support trading activity near the $100 stated par amount.

STRC Moves to Daily Dividends

In a significant structural update for investors, shareholders voted to approve a transition to daily dividend payments during a meeting on October 28. Under the new policy, STRC is scheduled to begin paying dividends on a daily basis starting November 1, with sister securities STRF, STRK, and STRD slated to follow suit on January 1, 2027.

Chief Executive Phong Le framed the structural modification as a forward-looking step toward the evolution of modern financial markets. "Daily dividends are a natural step toward the tokenized, 24/7/365 financial system," Le said. "Digital Credit is being built for that world, and Strategy intends to lead it."

Additionally, Strategy anticipates that its preferred distributions will qualify as a non-taxable return of capital for shareholders for a duration of ten years or more, largely because the company does not project positive accumulated earnings and profits over that horizon. Management has advised all shareholders to consult their respective independent tax advisors regarding personal tax implications.

Meanwhile, Strategy’s STRC stock has been steadily edging closer to the $100 threshold. Earlier in the day, STRC touched $99.99, a milestone that, once par value is fully realized, could potentially reopen pathways for the resumption of fresh funding designated for direct bitcoin purchases. As previously noted, shareholders overwhelmingly approved the shift to daily dividend disbursements specifically to enhance market liquidity and help minimize price volatility. However, even with the stock nearing its par value, Strategy has not yet formally confirmed an immediate restart of STRC share issuance.
