Blockbuster movies can still dominate the box office long after their initial theatrical run, a phenomenon recently underscored by Marvel Studios’ release of Avengers Endgame: Encore. Following in those lucrative footsteps, Sony Pictures is reportedly preparing a strategic theatrical rerelease for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The upcoming return to the big screen aims to lure web-head fans back into auditoriums by offering fresh incentives, most notably a batch of previously unseen footage and deleted cameos that tie deeper into the overarching Marvel Cinematic Universe.
According to initial reports from Deadline, the upcoming theatrical expansion of Spider-Man: Brand New Day will incorporate at least one notable cameo that was left on the cutting room floor during the film’s initial editing process. Insiders indicate that the restored sequence features Rosario Dawson reprising her role as Claire Temple, widely recognized by fans as the resilient "Night Nurse." Dawson famously portrayed Temple across multiple gritty Marvel television series produced for Netflix, including Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders.
While the character of the Night Nurse has a rich history in Marvel Comics dating back to the early 1970s—where a similarly titled medic named Linda Carter tended to the injuries of New York City’s street-level vigilantes—Dawson’s integration into the cinematic side of the franchise represents a long-awaited bridge between the studio’s cinematic releases and the television corner of the universe. Dawson has previously acknowledged in interviews that she filmed sequences for the project that ultimately did not make the final theatrical cut. Furthermore, Deadline’s reporting suggests that the Claire Temple sequence is only part of the package, pointing to additional surprises hidden within the newly assembled footage.

Sony’s Spider-Man Rerelease History
If these reports prove accurate, this strategy will mark a familiar playbook for Sony Pictures regarding its Tom Holland-led Spider-Man franchise. The studio previously deployed similar tactics for past installments, releasing an extended cut of Spider-Man: Far From Home as well as the fan-focused "More Fun Stuff Version" of Spider-Man: No Way Home, both of which utilized deleted scenes and alternate sequences to entice audiences back to theaters for repeat viewings.
The impending rerelease of Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives as the film enjoys an already historic box office run. According to tracking data from Box Office Mojo, the film’s cumulative global box office gross currently stands at an astounding $2.495 billion. Domestically, Brand New Day has cemented itself as a juggernaut, pulling in $950 million over its first two months in theaters and establishing itself as one of the highest-grossing domestic releases of all time. Globally, the film sits comfortably as the third-highest-grossing movie in cinematic history, trailing only James Cameron’s original Avatar and Marvel’s monumental Avengers: Endgame.
While the incoming box office boost from the rerelease is expected to push the film’s lifetime earnings even higher, industry analysts note it remains unlikely to overtake the top spots. Brand New Day still sits roughly $428 million behind Avatar, meaning the milestone of capturing the global all-time crown remains out of reach. Nevertheless, the studio’s decision to bring the film back to the big screen highlights the enduring theatrical appetite for eventized superhero cinema.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day remains available in select theaters, with the expanded rerelease slated to roll out to cinemas in the near future.
