Sony Introduces Strict Lottery System and Playtime Requirements for PS5 Pro Purchases in Japan to Combat Scalpers

In an unprecedented move to combat rampant scalping and address severe supply constraints, Sony has officially instituted a strict lottery system and eligibility requirements for consumers looking to purchase the PlayStation 5 Pro in Japan. The high-performance console, which represents Sony’s mid-generation hardware refresh, has faced intense consumer demand since its initial reveal. However, soaring component costs—particularly the rising prices of RAM and other critical manufacturing hardware—have driven retail prices to historic highs, while opportunistic resellers have increasingly dominated available inventory with the help of automated bots.

The situation has created a challenging landscape for genuine gamers hoping to secure the upgraded console, which boasts advanced features like PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) and an upgraded graphics processing unit. To level the playing field and ensure that consoles land in the hands of active players rather than automated resale operations, Sony announced the new purchasing protocol via the official PlayStation Blog. The system introduces a verification barrier designed specifically to filter out commercial scalpers who abuse retail channels for profit.

Under the newly outlined rules, prospective buyers in Japan must meet several specific criteria to even be considered for a chance to purchase the hardware. First and foremost, applicants must possess a valid Japanese PlayStation Network account with active access to online services. More importantly, Sony has tied lottery eligibility to a historical engagement metric: the associated PSN account must have a cumulative total of at least 60 hours of logged gameplay between September 27, 2024, and September 27, 2026.

Sony Officially Adds Requirement for Buying PS5 Pro

While a 60-hour playtime requirement over a two-year span is a relatively modest threshold that most dedicated or casual gamers easily surpass, it serves as an effective hurdle against newly created, single-purpose accounts typically operated by scalpers en masse. By requiring a historical track record of platform engagement, Sony can filter out the vast majority of automated bot accounts that usually hijack limited hardware drops.

The application window for the lottery is currently open and will accept entries until October 7. Following the close of the registration period, prospective purchasers will be notified by October 26 regarding whether they have been selected and granted the opportunity to complete a purchase. Those fortunate enough to win a spot in the lottery will then have a strict window ending on November 2 to acquire the console. The retail price for the system through this official channel is set at 137,980 yen, which translates to approximately $875 USD. Sony has emphasized that simply signing up for the lottery does not guarantee an order, as strict supply limitations mean that many applicants will inevitably miss out regardless of their eligibility.

While these stringent measures are currently exclusive to the Japanese market, industry observers are watching closely to see if Sony will implement similar lottery systems or verification hurdles in North America, Europe, and other global territories. Supply chain bottlenecks and high component costs continue to restrict global inventory, leaving international consumers vulnerable to inflated resale pricing on secondary markets. For gamers worldwide, the scarcity of the hardware creates a frustrating dilemma, particularly as the gaming community looks ahead to monumental upcoming software releases, most notably the highly anticipated launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 in November. As players weigh their options, they are frequently forced to choose between paying exorbitant resale markups or going without the hardware entirely during a pivotal software generation.
