Signal Introduces Numberless Registrations for Android Users in Latest Beta Release

Privacy-focused end-to-end encrypted messaging application Signal has taken a major step toward enhancing user anonymity by introducing an optional registration method that completely bypasses the requirement for a phone number. For years, the platform has required users to link a mobile number upon signing up, even after the platform introduced username support to shield personal identities during chats.

The requirement has long felt counterintuitive to privacy advocates, especially given that alternative messengers like Session and Matrix have never demanded phone numbers to establish an account. That landscape is now shifting, at least for Android users participating in the latest testing phases.

The release of Signal beta version 8.28 for Android introduces what the platform calls Signal Login. This optional alternative registration path allows new users to bypass the traditional phone number requirement entirely. Meanwhile, the existing registration flow remains fully intact for anyone who prefers to stick with the traditional method of linking a mobile number.

How Numberless Logins Work

For users eager to try the new registration flow, the mechanics behind the feature are designed to protect identity while maintaining account security. Instead of requesting a mobile number, Signal prompts users to complete a one-time fee of $2.99 via Google Pay. The exact pricing adjusts automatically depending on the device’s regional settings.

During early testing, observers noted that even with an active virtual private network connection pointing to the United States, the application displayed regional pricing based on local parameters rather than the simulated geographic location.

The involvement of Google in the payment process has raised questions among privacy-conscious users, but representatives from the Signal development team have addressed these concerns directly. Greyson Parrelli of the Signal team explained that the transaction routes through the same zero-knowledge proof architecture that the non-profit organization already utilizes for processing financial donations. Through this technical implementation, no persistent link is established between the financial purchase transaction and the newly created messaging account.

Once the payment successfully clears, the application generates a pair of cryptographic keys that serve as the fundamental identity for the account. A 32-character Account ID and a 64-character Recovery Key replace the traditional phone number. Signal does not store these keys on a central server, meaning that if a user loses either the Account ID or the Recovery Key, the platform has no mechanism to recover the account.

To bolster security further, users can integrate two-factor authentication via time-based one-time passwords after completing the registration process. Furthermore, the development team has confirmed ongoing support for passkeys, which will include compatibility with hardware security keys.

While Android beta testers can explore the feature immediately, users looking for equivalent support on Apple’s iOS platform will have to wait, as Signal Login is not scheduled to arrive on iOS devices in the near future.

The Play Services Caveat

Despite the significant privacy leap, the current implementation of Signal Login comes with a notable technical limitation. Because the registration payment routes directly through the Google Play Store, the feature currently depends heavily on Google Play Services.

As a result, mobile devices operating without Google Play Services cannot access the numberless registration option. Users who rely on de-Googled smartphones or custom privacy-focused operating systems will need to wait until alternative payment mechanisms are developed and implemented.

Although official support documentation for the feature mentions Apple Pay alongside Google Pay as a potential payment option, this currently contradicts observations from the beta application build, as well as statements made by Signal team members on community forums. Additional payment gateways are expected to be incorporated as the feature matures and moves closer to a stable public release.

Testing the Feature Now

The packages for the 8.28.x beta series are currently available for users who want to test the new functionality. Interested participants can acquire the files directly from the official Signal GitHub repositories and sideload the application onto compatible Android devices.

As Signal continues to refine the registration process during the beta testing phase, the introduction of numberless accounts marks a notable shift for a platform that has long tied digital communication to traditional telecommunication infrastructure.
