Meanwhile, recognized as the world’s first life insurer licensed to operate entirely in Bitcoin, has successfully raised $37.5 million in a new funding round from its existing investors. The fresh capital infusion highlights a growing institutional and high-net-worth appetite for digital asset-based financial products as families across international markets navigate ongoing macroeconomic uncertainty.
Bain Capital Crypto spearheaded the latest funding round, with substantial participation coming from a roster of prominent venture capital and institutional backers, including Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures, and Morgan Creek Digital. High-profile tech entrepreneur Sam Altman also participated as a backer, continuing his support for the firm. With this latest injection of capital, Meanwhile’s total funding raised since its inception has surpassed $180 million.
According to the company, the new financing round directly responds to a sharp surge in demand for its specialized Bitcoin life insurance policies outside the United States. Wealth management clients in regions such as Asia, Europe, and the Middle East have increasingly turned to alternative asset structures to safeguard their wealth amid fluctuating global economies.
Zac Townsend, co-founder and chief executive officer of Meanwhile, emphasized the unique market gap the company is filling for affluent clientele. Wealthy families around the world already hold significant positions in Bitcoin, Townsend noted, but until now, they have lacked a regulated, compliant mechanism to pass those digital assets down to future generations. The influx of inquiries from brokers reacting to their clients’ demands prompted the company to seek additional capital to scale its operations and keep pace with market momentum.
The financing follows the early 2026 launch of BTC Life 1-Pay, a single-premium whole life insurance policy specifically tailored for high-net-worth clients residing outside the United States. This offering marked Meanwhile’s second major product line, following the introduction of its flagship BTC 10-Pay policy, which was designed to cater specifically to US taxpayers.
Under the mechanics of the BTC Life 1-Pay policy, a client pays a single premium denominated in Bitcoin and in return receives a guaranteed death benefit paid out in Bitcoin for life. The policy’s underlying value accumulates natively in Bitcoin. Furthermore, after holding the policy for one year, the owner gains the flexibility to borrow up to 90% of its value, operating without a strict repayment schedule and free from the threat of margin calls.
These structural features—combined with the fact that policies can be owned directly by individuals, trusts, or corporate entities—make the insurance products uniquely suited for long-term succession and comprehensive estate planning.
In the wake of its product expansions, Meanwhile has successfully established partnerships with 15 elite brokerages that serve wealthy families across key financial hubs, including Singapore, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates, and Switzerland. Among its strategic partners are Lioner, a prominent insurance, trust, and family office group maintaining operations in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Zurich, as well as the Apeiron Group, a specialized marketplace for high-net-worth life insurance.
Justin Man, chief executive officer of Apeiron Group, pointed to a broader paradigm shift occurring within wealth management circles. The industry is reaching a critical turning point where wealthy clients are no longer just asking how to acquire and hold Bitcoin and other digital assets, Man explained. Instead, they are actively seeking sophisticated strategies on how to plan around these holdings and ultimately execute seamless wealth transfers to the next generation.
Reflecting this commercial traction, Meanwhile reported that its net long-term underwriting income has already surpassed the total figures recorded for the entirety of last year. The company stated that it is currently on track to more than double its underwriting income through the course of 2026, though specific financial figures were not publicly disclosed.
Stefan Cohen, a partner at Bain Capital Crypto, praised the company’s unique operational model and rapid commercial scaling. Meanwhile has successfully engineered every layer of a regulated life insurer while maintaining the agility and velocity of an artificial intelligence-enabled startup, Cohen observed. He added that the robust growth demonstrated throughout the year serves as ultimate validation of the business model, making the firm proud to participate in this follow-on financing round.
The operational backbone of the enterprise is housed within its operating entity, Meanwhile Insurance Bitcoin (Bermuda) Limited. This corporate body holds the distinction of being the recipient of the very first Class IILT license ever granted by the Bermuda Monetary Authority. The company secured the regulatory designation in July 2024 after successfully graduating from a rigorous two-year stint within the regulator’s specialized sandbox environment.
Operating with a fully localized financial architecture, the insurer maintains its entire balance sheet, operational reserves, and audited financial statements denominated purely in Bitcoin. To ensure maximum security and regulatory compliance for its clientele, all policyholder Bitcoin assets are held securely with regulated institutional custodians.
