Sam Altman-Backed Bitcoin Life Insurer Meanwhile Raises $37.5 Million Amid Global Demand Surge

Meanwhile, the world’s first life insurer licensed to operate entirely in Bitcoin, has successfully closed a $37.5 million funding round from its existing investors as high-net-worth families across international markets turn increasingly toward digital assets for wealth preservation and estate planning.

The latest financing injection was led by Bain Capital Crypto, with broad participation from a roster of prominent venture capital and institutional backers, including Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures, and Morgan Creek Digital. High-profile tech entrepreneur Sam Altman also counts himself among the company’s early and ongoing backers. With this fresh capital secured, Meanwhile’s total funding raised since its inception has surpassed the $180 million milestone.

According to the company, the new funding round arrives on the heels of a significant surge in demand for its specialized Bitcoin-denominated life insurance policies outside of the United States. High-net-worth clients, particularly across regions in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, have increasingly sought out alternative financial vehicles amid broader macroeconomic instability and currency fluctuations.

Zac Townsend, co-founder and CEO of Meanwhile, pointed to a profound gap in the traditional wealth management ecosystem that the company was built to solve. Wealthy families around the world already hold substantial allocations of Bitcoin, yet until recently, they have lacked a compliant, regulated mechanism to manage, secure, and pass down those digital fortunes to subsequent generations.

Brokers have repeatedly approached the company because their affluent clients kept asking for regulated legacy solutions tailored to digital assets, Townsend explained in a statement regarding the new financing. This latest round of funding will directly empower the company to keep pace with that escalating commercial demand and expand its operational capacity globally.

The capital raise follows a pivotal product rollout earlier in the year when Meanwhile launched BTC Life 1-Pay, a single-premium whole life insurance policy specifically designed for high-net-worth clients located outside the United States. This offering represented the company’s second major product line, following the introduction of its BTC 10-Pay policy, which was originally structured to cater to the unique tax and regulatory requirements of US taxpayers.

Under the terms of the BTC Life 1-Pay policy, a client pays a single, upfront premium in Bitcoin and, in return, receives a guaranteed death benefit denominated entirely in Bitcoin for life. The underlying value of the policy continues to grow in Bitcoin terms. Furthermore, after the first year of the policy has elapsed, the owner gains the financial flexibility to borrow up to 90 percent of the policy’s value, operating with no rigid repayment schedule and free from the threat of margin calls.

These policies are engineered with maximum structural flexibility, allowing them to be owned directly by individuals, as well as through legal structures such as trusts and corporate entities. Company executives emphasize that this structural versatility makes the policies exceptionally well-suited for complex international succession and estate planning scenarios.

Since the launch of its international product offerings, Meanwhile has successfully established formal partnerships with 15 elite brokerages serving affluent families in major global financial hubs, including Singapore, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates, and Switzerland. Among its key distribution partners are Lioner, a prominent insurance, trust, and family office group maintaining operations in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Zurich, alongside Apeiron Group, a specialized marketplace for high-net-worth life insurance.

Justin Man, CEO of Apeiron Group, highlighted the shifting mindset among ultra-wealthy clients regarding the role of digital assets in long-term financial portfolios. The market is reaching a distinct turning point where affluent clients are no longer simply asking how to securely hold Bitcoin and other digital assets, Man noted. Instead, they are actively looking for professional guidance on how to plan around those assets and seamlessly transfer that accumulated wealth to the next generation.

On the operational and financial front, Meanwhile reported that its net long-term underwriting income has already surpassed the entirety of last year’s figures and remains firmly on an upward trajectory to more than double throughout the course of 2026. While the company opted not to disclose specific financial figures to the public, the growth metrics underscore a rapidly expanding commercial footprint.

Stefan Cohen, a partner at Bain Capital Crypto, praised the company’s unique organizational architecture and rapid scaling. Meanwhile has successfully engineered every layer of a fully regulated life insurer while maintaining the speed, agility, and innovative culture of an AI-enabled startup, Cohen observed. He added that the remarkable commercial growth achieved over the past year thoroughly validates the business model, cementing the firm’s conviction to participate in this follow-on funding round.

The structural foundation of the insurer rests upon its primary operating entity, Meanwhile Insurance Bitcoin (Bermuda) Limited. The firm holds the distinction of being the very first Class IILT life insurance license granted by the Bermuda Monetary Authority. This regulatory milestone was achieved in July 2024, following a rigorous two-year development period operating within the strict confines of the regulator’s specialized financial sandbox.

Operating within a fully regulated paradigm, the insurer maintains its balance sheet, financial reserves, and all audited financial statements denominated explicitly in Bitcoin. To ensure the highest standards of safety and institutional compliance, all policyholder Bitcoin assets are entrusted to regulated, enterprise-grade institutional custodians.
