Neon Strikes Back: Rival Studio Announces Competing SCP Foundation Movie With Proper Licensing After A24 Backlash

The fiercely protective internet horror community found itself embroiled in major controversy recently when entertainment company A24 announced that it was moving forward with plans to produce a film based on the SCP Foundation universe. However, the excitement that usually accompanies a major studio adaptation of a beloved internet phenomenon quickly turned to anger and skepticism. It soon became apparent that the studio had failed to contact the dedicated SCP Wiki team prior to the announcement. More critically, A24 had not committed to releasing the upcoming picture under the mandatory Creative Commons license that governs all creative works originating from the platform—a foundational rule that forms the absolute bedrock of the entire SCP community.

Sensing a clear and immediate public relations opportunity amid the widespread online backlash, rival independent film distributor Neon swiftly stepped into the fray to capitalize on the misstep. Neon announced that it is officially developing its own motion picture inspired by the SCP Foundation lore. Crucially, unlike its competitor, Neon took the proactive step of reaching out directly to the SCP Foundation Wiki team ahead of time. In addition to opening lines of communication, the studio has formally pledged to release the finished feature film under the exact open-source legal framework required by the community: the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike, or CC BY-SA, license.

Neon sticks it to A24 by announcing a Creative Commons SCP Foundation movie

Despite the stark contrast in how the two studios approached the community, industry observers note that Neon’s project remains an independent venture and is by no means an "official" production sanctioned by the wiki creators. The staff and administrators of the SCP Foundation Wiki are not involved in the writing, development, or overall production of the film. Furthermore, the wiki team is not receiving any financial compensation for the project, maintaining a strictly neutral stance. The official position of the community leadership is not to endorse such commercial cinematic projects, ensuring that the platform maintains its independent, community-driven identity even as Hollywood takes notice of its intellectual property.

Aside from the crucial licensing agreement and the clear distinction regarding official involvement, there is currently almost no tangible information available concerning the plot, cast, or creative direction of Neon’s upcoming film. However, the studio has provided a tentative release window, stating that the picture is slated to hit theaters in 2027. This timeline suggests that the production may follow a relatively quick turnaround and could potentially operate as a lower-budget affair compared to major studio blockbusters. Such a strategy would hardly come as a shock to industry veterans, given the unique commercial challenges associated with financing, marketing, and turning a profit on a commercial feature film produced entirely under a ShareAlike open-source license, which inherently allows others to freely build upon and adapt the released work.

The cooperative approach taken by Neon has nonetheless earned high praise from the people who maintain the vast online repository of anomalous lore, creatures, and containment procedures. In a formal joint statement addressing the development, the SCP Foundation Wiki admin team expressed their gratitude for the studio’s professionalism. The statement emphasized that the staff of the SCP Foundation Wiki and the broader community deeply appreciate Neon’s excellent communication, their clear commitment to strictly following the legal and ethical requirements of the community’s license, and their dedication to upholding the spirit of open collaboration that has remained at the absolute core of the SCP Foundation project since its inception.
