Microsoft’s Latest PowerToys Update Adds New Mouse Utilities, Command Palette Improvements, and More

Microsoft has released a major update to its popular Windows customization suite, PowerToys, introducing a robust array of enhancements designed to make daily computing more efficient. Version 0.102 brings clever new mouse utilities, significant expansions to the Command Palette, modernized user interfaces for foundational tools, and deeper keyboard management options.

For those unfamiliar with the ecosystem, Microsoft PowerToys is a free collection of open-source utilities tailored for power users, administrators, and anyone looking to squeeze extra productivity and customization out of the Windows operating system. Often described as a digital tool drawer for Windows, the suite allows users to fundamentally alter and improve how they interact with their desktops, manage windows, pick colors, extract text, and automate repetitive tasks.

With the rollout of version 0.102, Microsoft is continuing its tradition of listening closely to community feedback and implementing tools that solve subtle, everyday friction points in the Windows user experience.

Smarter Mouse Controls and Cursor Management

Among the most notable additions in the latest release are two new mouse utilities engineered to reduce physical strain and streamline desktop navigation. The first of these features is called Mouse Button Lock. Designed to alleviate the fatigue associated with extended drag-and-drop operations, this utility lets users select and drag items across the screen without needing to maintain continuous physical pressure on the mouse button.

To activate Mouse Button Lock, a user simply holds down the mouse button for a predetermined number of seconds. Upon releasing the button, the system maintains the "clicked" state, allowing the user to seamlessly drag windows, highlight text, or manipulate objects in image editing software until they click again to release the hold. This capability proves particularly valuable for graphic designers, digital artists, and professionals engaged in meticulous file management or intricate image editing tasks that require long, sustained mouse movements across multiple monitors.

Complementing Mouse Button Lock is CursorHide, a utility focused on visual clarity and reducing screen clutter. CursorHide automatically conceals the mouse cursor whenever the user begins typing on the keyboard, or when the mouse remains idle for a specified duration, or both. The moment the user touches the mouse again, the cursor instantly reappears. This ensures that the pointer never obscures important text while writing code, drafting documents, or reading long-form articles, creating a cleaner and less distracting workspace.

Expanding the Command Palette and Keyboard Flexibility

The Command Palette within PowerToys has also undergone a substantial upgrade, transforming it into an even more powerful centralized hub for system navigation and utility launching. Version 0.102 introduces a brand-new quick-access panel that empowers users to pin their favorite commands and launch them instantly using convenient keyboard shortcuts ranging from Alt and the numbers one through nine.

In addition to quick-pinning, the enhanced Command Palette now supports deep searching through Windows settings, allowing users to locate specific configuration menus without digging through the standard Windows Settings app. Furthermore, the palette now accommodates multiple clocks across different time zones, making it an indispensable tool for remote workers and professionals collaborating with international teams. In a nod to modern hardware developments, the Command Palette can now also be controlled directly using the dedicated Copilot key on compatible modern keyboards, bridging the gap between traditional power-user tools and AI-driven hardware features.

The Keyboard Manager tool has similarly received a boost in flexibility. Users can now assign a key an alternative function when it is pressed entirely on its own, while simultaneously preserving its normal, default function when it is utilized as part of standard key combinations. This granular level of control enables power users to optimize their keyboard layouts for specific applications without sacrificing essential system shortcuts.

Modernized Tools and Advanced System Controls

Beyond mouse and keyboard enhancements, version 0.102 introduces several multimedia and workflow improvements. Users can now combine screenshots directly with locally transcribed voice notes, streamlining the process of capturing and annotating visual information with audio context. Additionally, the update expands support for controlling a greater number of PowerToys features directly via the command line, offering automation enthusiasts and system administrators deeper scriptability.

Under the hood, Microsoft continues to modernize the legacy architecture of the suite. Two of the most popular utilities in the collection—Color Picker and Text Extractor—have been fully updated to utilize WinUI 3, ensuring a more modern, cohesive visual presentation that aligns with the design language of Windows 11. Meanwhile, FancyZones, the advanced window-management utility that lets users create complex grid layouts on their desktops, has received an update that allows users to quickly cycle and switch between different window layouts simply by scrolling the mouse wheel.

PowerToys 0.102 is available now for download directly from Microsoft’s GitHub repository. Existing users can also acquire the update seamlessly by checking for updates from within the PowerToys application interface itself.
