Microsoft PowerToys update makes your mouse smarter in Windows

For those unfamiliar with the ecosystem, PowerToys operates as a free, open-source collection of system utilities developed by Microsoft in collaboration with the open-source community. Functioning much like a digital Swiss Army knife or an advanced tool drawer for Windows, the suite provides advanced features and deep customization options that go beyond the default operating system settings. The latest release continues this tradition of targeted productivity boosts, focusing heavily on reducing physical strain and minimizing friction during complex digital tasks.

Smarter Mouse Controls: Mouse Button Lock and CursorHide

Among the headline additions in version 0.102 are two distinct mouse utilities intended to make navigation smoother and more ergonomic. The first of these is Mouse Button Lock, a tool engineered to assist with tasks that require extended periods of clicking and dragging, such as image editing, text block highlighting, or file organization.

Traditionally, performing these actions requires maintaining continuous physical pressure on a mouse button or trackpad, which can cause hand fatigue during long editing sessions. Mouse Button Lock solves this by allowing users to lock a button down simply by holding it for a few seconds. Once engaged, the user can freely drag, select, or move items across the screen without holding the button, and release the lock with a subsequent click. This utility bridges a gap for accessibility and intensive creative tasks alike.

The second mouse-centric addition is CursorHide, an automated utility designed to clear visual clutter from the screen. The feature automatically conceals the mouse cursor whenever the user begins typing on the keyboard, or after a specified period of inactivity, or a combination of both conditions. The cursor instantly reappears the moment the mouse is moved again, ensuring an uninterrupted view for reading long documents, watching video content, or typing code without an errant pointer sitting in the middle of the workspace.

Command Palette Improvements and Quick-Access Panels

The Command Palette, a versatile hub within PowerToys for executing quick actions and searching system parameters, has received a substantial upgrade package in this release. Most notably, a new quick-access panel has been introduced, giving users the ability to pin their most frequently used commands. These pinned items can then be launched instantly using straightforward keyboard shortcuts ranging from Alt and the number one through nine.

Furthermore, the Command Palette’s search capabilities have been expanded to allow users to quickly hunt down specific Windows or PowerToys settings directly through the interface. The utility now also supports multiple clocks configured for different time zones, making it easier for remote workers and international teams to keep track of global schedules. In a nod to modern hardware trends, the Command Palette can now also be controlled directly via the dedicated Copilot key on compatible keyboards, integrating Microsoft’s AI-adjacent hardware push deeper into system navigation.

Advanced Keyboard Mapping and Productivity Additions

Beyond mouse and palette updates, the Keyboard Manager tool within PowerToys has gained more granular configuration options. Users can now assign an alternative function to a single key when it is pressed entirely on its own, while simultaneously preserving its standard functionality when it forms part of a multi-key keyboard shortcut. This allows for hyper-specific workflow tailoring without sacrificing baseline usability.

The update also brings an inventive multimedia utility that blends visual and auditory note-taking, enabling users to effortlessly combine static screenshots with locally transcribed voice notes. This feature is expected to appeal strongly to researchers, students, and professionals who frequently compile visual evidence alongside spoken thoughts or meeting observations.

Command-line enthusiasts will also find plenty to appreciate, as version 0.102 expands the scope of features that can be controlled directly via the command line interface, opening up new avenues for automation scripts and batch operations.

Modernized Components and System Performance

In tandem with functional feature additions, the development team has continued its ongoing effort to modernize the underlying architecture of older PowerToys modules. In version 0.102, both the Color Picker and the Text Extractor utilities have been updated to utilize WinUI 3, bringing their visual design and performance frameworks into alignment with modern Windows design standards.

Additionally, FancyZones—the popular window management tool that allows users to create complex grid layouts for multitasking—has received a subtle but useful navigation upgrade. Users can now cycle smoothly between different window layouts simply by scrolling the mouse wheel while hovering over the management interface, speeding up the process of rearranging workspace configurations on the fly.

PowerToys version 0.102 is currently available for download directly from Microsoft’s GitHub repository. Existing users who already have the application installed on their Windows systems can also pull the update directly from within the program’s settings menu.
