Kalshi in advanced talks to raise new funding at $40B valuation: Reuters

According to people familiar with the matter who spoke with Reuters, existing investor Sequoia Capital and Wellington Management are currently in discussions to lead the high-stakes round. The prospective funding effort could also see participation from prominent growth investment firms Tiger Global Management and Dragoneer Investment Group.

This latest development follows a rapid succession of massive capital raises for the prediction market operator. It comes after Kalshi closed a $1 billion Series F funding round in May, which valued the company at $22 billion—a figure that had already doubled its valuation from just five months prior in December.

Reports that Kalshi was actively seeking funding at a $40 billion valuation first emerged at the beginning of the summer. The Financial Times initially reported on June 24 that the company was engaged in high-level discussions to secure fresh capital at the $40 billion price tag, noting at the time that the transaction could potentially close as soon as the third quarter of this year.

Cointelegraph reached out to Kalshi, Sequoia Capital, Wellington Management, Tiger Global Management, and Dragoneer Investment Group for comment regarding the ongoing negotiations but did not receive an immediate response from any of the organizations.

The meteoric rise in Kalshi’s valuation underscores the booming interest and capital inflows into prediction markets, a sector that has experienced explosive growth amid shifting regulatory landscapes, heightened public engagement with macroeconomic and political forecasting, and increasing mainstream financial backing. As prediction markets transition from niche financial instruments to widely recognized forecasting tools, major venture capital firms and institutional investors are aggressively positioning themselves to capture a share of the burgeoning market infrastructure.

At the same time, Kalshi’s rapid expansion is unfolding against a backdrop of complex legal and regulatory battles that continue to shape the industry’s trajectory. Beyond its corporate fundraising milestones, the platform has faced high-profile regulatory scrutiny and court challenges over the scope and permissibility of its event contracts, including a recent legal setback in which Kalshi lost an appeal, setting the stage for a potential battle before the Supreme Court. These regulatory hurdles highlight the unique operating environment of prediction markets, which frequently intersect with federal commodities regulations, election laws, and judicial interpretations of financial derivatives.

Despite these complex legal headwinds, investor appetite for Kalshi’s business model remains exceptionally strong, as evidenced by the advanced discussions for a $1 billion infusion at a $40 billion valuation. If finalized, the transaction would cement Kalshi’s status as one of the most valuable privately held financial technology and market platforms in the current landscape, reflecting sustained confidence from its backers in the long-term viability and scalability of prediction-based financial products.
