Crypto Security Scanners, $1B Government Bitcoin Transfers, and Strict European Stablecoin Deadlines Shape Markets

The cryptocurrency landscape experienced a flurry of major developments on multiple fronts, highlighted by prominent blockchain projects racing to secure advanced artificial intelligence defenses, massive movements of government-seized Bitcoin drawing market scrutiny, and European regulators dropping a hard deadline on non-compliant stablecoins.

As digital asset markets continue to evolve under shifting regulatory paradigms and escalating cybersecurity threats, participants across the ecosystem are being forced to adapt rapidly to institutional oversight and technological advancements. From the offices of major decentralized infrastructure providers to regulatory boardrooms in Frankfurt and Washington, the convergence of security, state-managed digital assets, and compliance took center stage.

Crypto Projects Apply for Anthropic’s New Frontier AI Security Scanner

Ethereum client developer Nethermind and Bitcoin and Lightning wallet ZEUS are among several prominent crypto companies that have rushed to apply for a newly launched Anthropic program. The initiative grants open-source projects direct access to critical security reports generated by the artificial intelligence firm’s most powerful models.

The projects submitted formal enrollment requests for the OSS Scanner, a program officially launched by Anthropic to help open-source developers proactively discover and remediate code vulnerabilities before malicious actors can exploit them in the wild. The program leverages advanced artificial intelligence to analyze complex codebases and pinpoint potential exploits with unprecedented speed and depth.

These security reports will be generated by our strongest models, including Claude Mythos, to give open-source projects the largest defensive advantage possible, Anthropic noted in its official public announcement.

The influx of applications from the blockchain sector highlights a broader, growing push among cryptocurrency firms to gain access to frontier AI models. Industry leaders argue that advanced defensive tooling is urgently needed to safeguard decentralized infrastructure against increasingly capable and well-resourced cyber attackers. Cybersecurity experts have repeatedly warned that uneven access to cutting-edge technology could leave defenders at a permanent disadvantage, particularly as powerful exploit tools become more widely available to malicious syndicates.

Anthropic clarified that the OSS Scanner is an opt-in service designed to build upon the groundwork laid by Project Glasswing. While the artificial intelligence company already regularly scans various open-source software packages for vulnerabilities and transmits security reports following a mandatory human review, that manual verification process is inherently slow. Because of these operational bottlenecks, developers are not always able to share identified vulnerabilities with the public or project maintainers as quickly as desired. By automating and scaling the identification process through frontier models, Anthropic aims to close the critical window of exposure that hackers frequently target.

US Moves Another $1 Billion in Seized Bitcoin Tied to Bitfinex Hack

In the United States, the federal government transferred more than $1 billion in Bitcoin linked directly to the infamous 2016 Bitfinex cryptocurrency exchange hack. The massive on-chain movement occurred on a Wednesday, taking place just hours after federal authorities shifted another $770 million in seized Bitcoin to Coinbase Prime.

According to transparent blockchain data, a government-associated wallet transferred more than 12,267 Bitcoin to an unidentified receiving address. On-chain analytics provider Arkham Research quickly linked the sending wallet to digital assets previously recovered from the massive Bitfinex security breach, an event that originally resulted in the theft of 119,756 Bitcoin.

These consecutive transactions represent nearly $1.8 billion in total Bitcoin movements executed within a span of just a few hours. Despite the substantial capital involved, the ultimate purpose behind these transfers remains officially unclear. Inquiries sent by industry media outlets to the United States Marshals Service and the Department of Justice regarding the Coinbase Prime transactions did not immediately receive a response.

This heightened on-chain activity arrives as Washington continues to shape its long-term policy approach toward government-held cryptocurrency holdings. Former President Donald Trump signed an executive order establishing a formal Strategic Bitcoin Reserve alongside a separate digital asset stockpile. In the months following the executive action, federal lawmakers have advanced various legislative packages designed to formalize and institutionalize the national reserve.

Current industry and government estimates project that the United States government holds approximately 328,372 Bitcoin, an enormous stockpile largely accumulated through decades of criminal investigations, asset forfeitures, and law enforcement seizures. How Washington decides to manage, liquidate, or hold these digital assets remains one of the most closely watched macroeconomic variables in the broader cryptocurrency market.

ESMA Gives Crypto Firms 3 Months to Exit Non-Compliant Stablecoins

Across the Atlantic Ocean, the European Securities and Markets Authority has ratcheted up pressure on the digital asset sector by urging European Union crypto firms to completely halt services involving stablecoins that fail to comply with the stringent Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation framework. Regulators have established a strict three-month deadline to address and wind down all existing exposures.

On Thursday, ESMA released formal guidance stating that national regulatory authorities should require companies to address remaining operational exposures to non-compliant stablecoins as soon as humanly possible, setting a hard deadline of no later than Jan. 8, 2027.

Crypto-asset service providers authorised under MiCA should cease providing services related to non-MiCA-compliant stablecoins to clients in the European Union, ESMA stated in its regulatory communication.

The comprehensive guidance covers a wide array of MiCA-regulated cryptocurrency services, including trading platforms, exchange services, order execution, client asset custody, cross-border transfers, investment advice, and portfolio management. Firms that fail to decouple their infrastructure from unauthorized tokens risk severe enforcement actions from national watchdogs.

This recent regulatory update significantly expands upon previous warnings issued by ESMA in January 2025, which initially called for targeted restrictions on trading and exchange services involving non-compliant stablecoins. By narrowing the window to three months, European authorities are signaling a zero-tolerance approach toward regulatory arbitrage, ensuring that the bloc’s digital asset market operates under unified, transparent, and legally binding standards.
