Coinbase Completes Integration of Deribit to Unlock Regulated Global Derivatives for US Customers

Coinbase has officially completed its integration of the prominent derivatives exchange Deribit, marking a major milestone that establishes a fully regulated pathway for eligible United States customers to tap into global cryptocurrency derivatives markets that have traditionally remained entirely out of reach.

The major crypto exchange announced the development, explaining that the strategic integration successfully combines its international derivatives business operations directly with Deribit. At the same time, the arrangement opens up seamless access to this deep liquidity pool for eligible US customers through Coinbase Financial Markets, the company’s dedicated derivatives unit that operates under the regulatory oversight of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. As part of the technical rollout and corporate consolidation, existing Coinbase International Exchange balances and trading positions were successfully migrated over to Deribit.

According to figures highlighted by Coinbase, cryptocurrency derivatives account for roughly 80% of total trading volume across the global digital asset ecosystem. Despite this massive market share, US-based traders have historically lacked a clear, regulated path to access the deeper options and perpetual futures markets that have long flourished offshore. This regulatory and operational bottleneck began to shift in May, following a pivotal policy decision when the Commodity Futures Trading Commission issued regulatory guidance that effectively allowed Coinbase Financial Markets to legally connect domestic clients to global derivatives markets for the first time.

Under the newly established framework, Coinbase announced that US institutional clients will now be able to access Deribit’s sophisticated suite of options and perpetual futures products directly through Coinbase Prime and Coinbase Financial Markets. This integration represents a dramatic shift in how institutional capital moves within the digital asset sector. Previously, institutional market participants based in the United States typically had to establish complex offshore corporate entities and maintain entirely separate trading infrastructures simply to access the same advanced financial instruments and liquidity pools.

Looking ahead at the rollout schedule, options trading through Coinbase Prime is widely expected to become fully available to clients in the coming weeks. Furthermore, Coinbase outlined plans to introduce matching options products for eligible non-US retail traders over that exact same operational period, which will then be followed by the introduction of US retail access later this year, pending further operational alignment.

This major milestone follows a series of regulatory achievements for the company, including recent regulatory approvals that further solidify its infrastructure ambitions within the domestic financial landscape. As the cryptocurrency sector continues to mature, bridges between domestic regulatory compliance and global liquidity are reshaping how institutional and retail participants manage risk, execute trading strategies, and interact with digital asset derivatives on a global scale.
