Cloudflare Unveils Major Redesign of Radar to Bring Global Internet Insights to a Wider Audience

Cloudflare has announced a comprehensive redesign of its public-facing data platform, Radar, aiming to transform the real-time internet analytics tool into an approachable resource for a broader audience while preserving the deep technical rigor relied upon by industry experts.

Powered by Cloudflare’s extensive global network, Radar provides a real-time window into worldwide internet trends. Since its initial launch in 2020, the platform has cultivated a dedicated following among technical users, including network operators, cybersecurity professionals, and academic researchers who depend on its granular metrics to observe global events, traffic shifts, and structural changes across the digital landscape.

However, Cloudflare recognized that Radar possesses untapped potential to serve as a reliable, self-serve resource for journalists, human rights advocates, policymakers, and everyday internet users. Making the platform accessible to non-technical users became a central design goal, prompting the development team to reevaluate the overall user experience and determine how to make the interface approachable without sacrificing depth.

Challenges with the Previous Design

While the original landing page successfully conveyed the sheer breadth of Cloudflare’s data collection capabilities, the architecture of the information made it difficult for users to parse quickly. The legacy layout relied heavily on a bento box arrangement that assigned similar visual weight to disparate metrics, creating a cluttered environment. Additionally, vertical card layouts frequently disrupted natural reading patterns, and the styling felt somewhat disconnected from Cloudflare’s broader corporate brand identity.

User feedback consistently highlighted these hurdles. External educators noted that one of their primary frustrations with the legacy platform was the difficulty of presenting Radar data effectively to students, underscoring how intimidating the interface could feel to first-time visitors. The development team realized that the homepage needed to establish a clearer narrative path through the content rather than presenting users with an overwhelming wall of disparate data points simultaneously.

Beyond mere content reorganization, the overhaul sought to bridge the gap between Radar and the wider Cloudflare ecosystem. For external users, visual and structural consistency directly influences both trust and usability. A cohesive brand experience signals that Radar functions as an authoritative, reliable source, while familiar layout patterns reduce the cognitive load required to navigate complex information.

Introducing Radar’s New Landing Page

The redesigned Radar platform centers on a universally understood visual reference: a map. Although the internet frequently transcends traditional national borders, the real-world impact of internet disruptions, traffic anomalies, and connectivity trends is most intuitively understood through a geographic lens.

The top section of the updated homepage prioritizes two critical metrics: internet traffic and outages. Outages are featured prominently because they represent some of the most concrete, timely, and salient indicators of the state of the digital world. Traffic metrics are displayed alongside outages to communicate the vast scale and breadth of Radar’s data observations. Furthermore, the interactive map serves as a primary navigation hub, allowing users to transition seamlessly from a high-level global perspective down to specific countries, localized trends, and in-depth data stories.

Bridging technical depth and usability: The story behind Radar’s redesign

Beneath the map, the legacy bento box chart widgets have been replaced with a tabbed workflow. This new structure enables users to explore information more deliberately. The tabs provide high-level summary statistics to demonstrate the scope of Radar’s capabilities, while offering clear calls to action for deeper exploration. This hierarchy prevents the page from feeling overwhelming and provides a clean preview of the wide array of information the platform houses.

From Concept to Reality: Developing a Unified Design Language

To establish a cohesive design language for the updated Radar, the team examined the three primary pillars of Cloudflare’s existing content ecosystem: marketing pages, content platforms, and product interfaces.

Ultimately, the team determined that Radar exists at the intersection of all three domains. At its core, Radar functions as a sophisticated data product, yet it remains public-facing and inherently rich in content. The final strategy successfully blends design characteristics from each pillar: it maintains the approachable, welcoming nature of marketing materials; the structured, highly navigable layout of editorial content; and the long-term maintainability afforded by migrating to Kumo components, the standardized building blocks used across Cloudflare’s product design system.

Throughout the development process, the team experimented with various iterations of the central map to strike the correct balance between data density and user approachability. Early conceptual versions featured dense, highly technical visualizations intended to communicate immediate credibility through sheer volume of data. Conversely, subsequent explorations leaned too heavily toward simplified, marketing-style aesthetics; while visually approachable, those designs risked making Radar’s dynamic, live data streams appear static or overly summarized. The final design successfully bridges these two extremes, retaining the appearance of live telemetry while remaining legible to casual observers.

The Future Vision and Evolution of Radar

Because Cloudflare sits in front of approximately twenty percent of all web traffic globally, Radar occupies a unique position to tell compelling, accurate stories about the health, security, and performance of the internet. To unlock the full value of this positioning, the platform aims to empower every user with real-time insights spanning security vulnerabilities, network performance metrics, and traffic volume fluctuations.

The recent redesign represents a foundational step toward that broader vision. Moving forward, the Radar team will continue to refine its analytical tools, data visualizations, and storytelling frameworks to remove friction for new audiences while simultaneously reinforcing the underlying technical data infrastructure. By combining rigorous engineering with a cleaner, human-centered user experience, Cloudflare is ensuring that a larger and more diverse group of people can explore, understand, and share insights regarding the state of the internet.

Gathering Community Feedback

As the platform moves into its next chapter, the development team is actively seeking input from the broader community to guide future enhancements. Users are encouraged to share feedback regarding which aspects of the new interface are successful, where friction still exists, and what specific insights remain difficult to uncover. Feedback can be submitted via social media channels or through direct communication with the Radar team.
