Cloudflare has announced a major expansion of its artificial intelligence infrastructure, introducing a new Web Search API designed to give AI agents direct, real-time access to the internet. Integrated directly into Cloudflare’s AI Gateway, the new offering aims to solve a persistent inefficiency in how autonomous AI agents fetch live information while simultaneously setting a higher industry standard for ethical web crawling and data transparency.
The launch addresses a fundamental limitation in current AI agent workflows. Historically, when an AI agent needs to retrieve a live web page, it frequently relies on educated guesswork, attempting to predict a URL and executing a tool call using command-line utilities like curl. This trial-and-error approach regularly results in "404 Not Found" errors when the agent miscalculates the exact address of the desired information. Relying on random URL guessing proves inefficient, resource-intensive, and prone to failure.
Cloudflare’s new approach mirrors human information-gathering habits. Rather than blindly guessing links, agents can now leverage integrated web search capabilities to query the internet, locate relevant data, and ground their responses in live, up-to-date information. To power this capability, Cloudflare is launching the Web Search API in partnership with established search providers Ceramic.ai, Exa, and Linkup.
What Can I Do with the Web Search API?
Artificial intelligence models are fundamentally constrained by the context provided to them. Standard machine learning models undergo extensive training before their weights are frozen at a specific point in time, leaving them restricted entirely to information that existed prior to their knowledge cutoff date. Consequently, engaging these models in discussions regarding recent events, rapidly changing application programming interfaces, or fast-evolving news developments presents a significant challenge.
Integrating a web search API directly into an application’s inference pipeline introduces a dynamic context layer. Instead of relying solely on static training data, applications can now have fresh, structured snippets from the web injected straight into the model’s context window. This architecture grants models immediate access to live information without requiring costly retraining cycles.
For developers building applications related to Cloudflare’s ecosystem, the limitation of static knowledge becomes particularly pronounced during rapid innovation cycles, such as the company’s recurring product launch events. With the integration of web search, developers and their agents can automatically retrieve the latest documentation and release notes for newly introduced developer tools, enabling them to build more efficiently and accurately.
Elevating the Industry Standard for Web Search
Beyond technical efficiency, Cloudflare’s new initiative places a strong emphasis on ethical considerations surrounding web crawling and content consumption. The company has long advocated for transparency, honesty, and strict adherence to established bot rules and preferences, arguing that website owners should retain meaningful control over how their digital content is utilized by automated systems.
As part of today’s launch, Cloudflare’s initial search partners have committed to meeting rigorous bot crawling standards. The crawlers operated by these web search providers must fully comply with Cloudflare’s publicly stated requirements for verified bots, as outlined in the company’s developer documentation. Furthermore, any web search responses generated through the API must include explicit links pointing to the original location of the crawled content.

Cloudflare executives emphasize that these rules foster a fairer internet ecosystem, granting content creators the autonomy to decide how their data is engaged by artificial intelligence systems. By ensuring that search partners identify their crawlers, respect site-level instructions via robots.txt, and properly attribute sources, the platform aims to establish a new benchmark for responsible automated data consumption.
Using the Web Search API via AI Gateway
Cloudflare’s AI Gateway serves as the central control plane for the new Web Search API. Designed to act as an operational hub for AI applications, AI Gateway already provides built-in observability, unified billing, security features, and access controls. Incorporating web search into this ecosystem allows developers to consume search capabilities using existing AI Gateway credits, collect granular logs and request data on search calls, and enforce governance over which applications can access specific search providers.
All web search queries and requests populate standard AI Gateway observability logs, and the associated costs draw down directly from the user’s unified credit balance. To address data privacy concerns, Cloudflare identifies partners that support Zero Data Retention policies, ensuring that sensitive organizational data is not retained by third-party search providers. Additionally, Cloudflare offers web search access at standard list API pricing supplied directly by its partners, without imposing any additional service markups.
The infrastructure also supports Bring-Your-Own-Key configurations for web search providers, mirroring the flexibility previously introduced for model inference providers. This allows organizations to integrate their existing enterprise setups and administrative credentials seamlessly within a few steps.
Developers interacting with the new infrastructure have multiple integration pathways depending on their system architecture. Teams utilizing existing backend services, mobile applications, or external platforms can query the web search functionality directly through a standard REST endpoint by passing an AI Gateway authentication token and specifying a preferred provider in the payload.
For developers building natively on Cloudflare’s edge computing platform using Cloudflare Workers, the integration requires minimal code through a dedicated worker binding. This binding allows serverless applications to execute search queries directly within their execution environment, returning structured JSON results for immediate processing by downstream language models.
Cloudflare is also developing native Server Tools directly within AI Gateway, which will soon eliminate the need for developers to manually define custom tool schemas for standard operations. Web search is slated to be one of the first built-in capabilities incorporated into this upcoming server-side stack, further simplifying how developers orchestrate AI agent workflows.
Developers can begin testing the new web search capabilities immediately through AI Gateway, the standalone REST API, or via the Cloudflare AI Playground using existing account credentials. Additional implementation details, documentation, and technical guides are available through the official Cloudflare developer portal.
