Meanwhile, the world’s first life insurer licensed to operate entirely in Bitcoin, has successfully raised $37.5 million in a new funding round backed by its existing investors, the company announced. The latest capital injection highlights the accelerating mainstream convergence of traditional estate planning and digital asset management, driven by a growing appetite among international high-net-worth individuals seeking regulated mechanisms to manage and transfer generational wealth held in cryptocurrency.
Bain Capital Crypto spearheaded the financing round, with robust participation from a roster of prominent venture capital firms and strategic investors, including Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures, and Morgan Creek Digital. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, a notable early backer of the enterprise, also maintained his support in the current round. With this latest influx of capital, Meanwhile’s total funding since its inception has surpassed the $180 million milestone, cementing its position as a uniquely capitalized player at the intersection of insurance and decentralized finance.
According to the company, the fresh funding round directly follows a pronounced surge in demand for its Bitcoin-denominated life insurance policies outside of the United States. International clients, particularly across regions experiencing distinct macroeconomic instability and shifting regulatory landscapes in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, have increasingly turned to alternative asset structures to safeguard their financial legacies.
Zac Townsend, co-founder and CEO of Meanwhile, emphasized the fundamental market gap that the company was created to address. Wealthy families around the world already hold substantial positions in Bitcoin, Townsend noted in a statement, but what they historically lacked was a compliant, fully regulated mechanism to pass those digital assets on to subsequent generations. Financial brokers across key global wealth hubs approached the company because their clients kept asking for viable succession solutions, Townsend explained, adding that this new funding round provides the necessary runway to keep pace with accelerating broker and client demand.
The capital raise arrives on the heels of several major product and operational milestones for the insurer. In early 2026, Meanwhile officially launched BTC Life 1-Pay, a single-premium whole life policy specifically tailored for high-net-worth clients based outside of the United States. This offering represents the company’s second major product line, following the introduction of BTC 10-Pay, which was originally engineered to accommodate the specific compliance and tax requirements of US taxpayers.
Under the terms of the BTC Life 1-Pay structure, an individual client pays a single, upfront premium entirely in Bitcoin and subsequently receives a guaranteed death benefit denominated in Bitcoin for life. The underlying cash value of the policy continues to grow within the Bitcoin ecosystem, and policyholders gain financial flexibility after the first year of ownership. Specifically, owners are permitted to borrow up to 90 percent of the policy’s cash value, functioning under terms that feature no rigid repayment schedule and no risk of margin calls—features designed to mirror the utility of traditional high-end insurance products while remaining native to the digital asset economy.
Furthermore, these policies can be owned directly by individuals, or structured through complex legal entities such as trusts or corporate structures. Company executives have pointed out that this multi-tiered ownership flexibility makes the products exceptionally well-suited for sophisticated succession planning, wealth preservation, and multi-generational estate structuring.
Since the rollout of its international product line, Meanwhile has successfully forged strategic partnerships with 15 major insurance brokerages serving affluent families across vital financial centers, including Singapore, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates, and Switzerland. Among the firm’s prominent distribution partners are Lioner, a specialized insurance, trust, and family office services group with operational footprints in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Zurich, as well as Apeiron Group, a leading marketplace and advisory platform for high-net-worth life insurance.
Justin Man, CEO of Apeiron Group, observed that the financial advisory sector is reaching a critical inflection point. The market is witnessing a profound shift where wealthy clients are moving past the initial question of how to simply hold Bitcoin and other digital assets, Man noted. Instead, clients are increasingly focused on how to strategically plan around these holdings and ultimately execute a seamless wealth transfer to the next generation.
On the operational and financial fronts, Meanwhile reported that its net long-term underwriting income has already surpassed the entirety of last year’s figures and remains firmly on an upward trajectory to more than double throughout 2026, though executive leadership elected not to disclose specific financial figures publicly.
Stefan Cohen, a partner at Bain Capital Crypto, praised the company’s unique structural architecture and execution. Meanwhile has successfully engineered every individual layer of a fully regulated life insurer while maintaining the agile operational tempo of an artificial intelligence-enabled startup, Cohen said. The substantial growth recorded over the past year thoroughly validates the business model, prompting the firm’s backers to enthusiastically reinvest in the enterprise.
The company’s primary operating entity, Meanwhile Insurance Bitcoin (Bermuda) Limited, operates under landmark regulatory oversight as the holder of the very first Class IILT license ever granted by the Bermuda Monetary Authority. The firm secured this milestone regulatory approval in July 2024 following a rigorous two-year development period spent operating within the regulator’s specialized sandbox environment.
In keeping with its commitment to transparency and institutional-grade security, the insurer’s entire corporate balance sheet, internal reserves, and audited financial statements are denominated natively in Bitcoin. To safeguard client assets, all policyholder Bitcoin is held securely with fully regulated, institutional-grade digital asset custodians, ensuring that the intersection of traditional life insurance and decentralized digital currency adheres to the highest standards of financial compliance and consumer protection.
