Sam Altman-Backed Meanwhile Raises $37.5M as High-Net-Worth Families Turn to Bitcoin Life Insurance

Meanwhile, recognized as the world’s first life insurer licensed to operate entirely in Bitcoin, has successfully closed a $37.5 million new funding round from its existing investors. The fresh capital injection brings the company’s cumulative funding past the $180 million mark, reinforcing its standing as a major player at the intersection of traditional financial services and digital asset management.

The financing round was led by Bain Capital Crypto, with broad participation from a roster of prominent venture capital firms and strategic investors, including Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures, and Morgan Creek Digital. High-profile technology entrepreneur Sam Altman is also among the company’s foundational backers.

According to the company, the latest funding round was catalyzed by an extraordinary surge in international demand for its Bitcoin-denominated life insurance policies. While the initial growth centered heavily on the United States, Meanwhile noted that wealthy families across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East are increasingly turning to its products as a hedge against broader macroeconomic instability and currency devaluation.

Zac Townsend, co-founder and chief executive officer of Meanwhile, emphasized the unique market gap the company was created to fill. Wealthy individuals and family offices across the globe have accumulated significant holdings of Bitcoin and other digital assets over the past decade, yet until recently, they lacked a fully regulated, compliant mechanism to manage, secure, and pass down that wealth across generations.

"Wealthy families around the world already hold Bitcoin," Townsend said in a statement accompanying the funding announcement. "What they haven’t had is a regulated way to pass it on. Brokers came to us because their clients kept asking. This round lets us keep up with them."

The latest capital infusion will be deployed directly to scale operations and meet this mounting institutional and brokerage demand. The rapid scaling follows a strategic expansion of the company’s product lineup earlier in 2026, when Meanwhile introduced BTC Life 1-Pay. Designed specifically for high-net-worth clients outside the United States, BTC Life 1-Pay is a single-premium whole life insurance policy that allows clients to pay a one-time premium in Bitcoin and secure a guaranteed death benefit denominated entirely in Bitcoin for life.

This offering builds upon the company’s initial flagship product, BTC 10-Pay, which was tailored primarily for United States taxpayers. Under the terms of the BTC Life 1-Pay policy, the policy’s underlying value appreciates directly in Bitcoin. Furthermore, after the first year of holding the policy, owners gain the flexibility to borrow up to 90% of its cash value without being subjected to a rigid repayment schedule or the risk of margin calls—a feature historically reserved for traditional fiat-based permanent life insurance policies held by ultra-high-net-worth individuals.

Because these policies can be owned directly by individuals, complex trusts, or corporate entities, Meanwhile has positioned them as an ideal instrument for long-term succession and estate planning in the digital age.

In the wake of the product’s rollout, Meanwhile has aggressively expanded its distribution network. The insurer has successfully signed partnerships with 15 major international brokerage firms specializing in servicing wealthy families in key global financial hubs, including Singapore, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates, and Switzerland. Among these strategic partners are Lioner—a prominent insurance, trust, and family office group operating across Hong Kong, Singapore, and Zurich—and Apeiron Group, a leading marketplace for high-net-worth life insurance solutions.

Justin Man, chief executive officer of Apeiron Group, highlighted the shifting mindset among wealthy clientele regarding digital wealth.

"We’re reaching a turning point where more high-net-worth clients are asking not just how to hold Bitcoin and digital assets, but how to plan around them and ultimately transfer that wealth to the next generation," Man observed.

The commercial momentum is already translating into measurable financial performance for the startup. Meanwhile reported that its net long-term underwriting income has already surpassed its total figures from the previous year and is currently on track to more than double throughout 2026, though the privately held company opted not to disclose specific revenue figures.

Investors have expressed strong confidence in the company’s unique operational model, which combines the rigorous compliance framework of a traditional insurance carrier with the rapid, scalable deployment of a modern technology startup.

Stefan Cohen, a partner at Bain Capital Crypto, praised the company’s structural execution. "Meanwhile owns every layer of a regulated life insurer and builds it like an AI-enabled startup," Cohen noted. "The growth this year proves the model, and we’re glad to back them again."

The regulatory foundation supporting Meanwhile’s operations remains a core pillar of its credibility. The company’s operating entity, Meanwhile Insurance Bitcoin (Bermuda) Limited, holds the historic distinction of being awarded the very first Class IILT insurance license granted by the Bermuda Monetary Authority. This regulatory milestone was achieved in July 2024 following a rigorous two-year development period inside the regulatory authority’s sandbox environment.

Operating under this strict regulatory oversight, the insurer maintains its entire balance sheet, corporate reserves, and audited financial statements denominated purely in Bitcoin. To ensure the highest levels of security and asset protection, all customer Bitcoin associated with policyholder reserves is stored securely with regulated institutional custodians rather than held directly through vulnerable, unregulated mechanisms.
