Sam Altman-Backed Bitcoin Insurer Meanwhile Secures $37.5M in Funding Amid Global Demand Surge

Meanwhile, the pioneering life insurer licensed to operate entirely within the digital asset ecosystem, has successfully raised $37.5 million in a new funding round backed by its existing investors, the company announced. The substantial capital injection underscores a growing institutional and high-net-worth appetite for Bitcoin-native financial products as clients across international markets seek regulated vehicles for wealth preservation and succession planning.

Bain Capital Crypto spearheaded the funding round, with significant participation from a roster of prominent venture capital firms and institutional players, including Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures, and Morgan Creek Digital. High-profile tech entrepreneur Sam Altman also counts himself among the company’s early and ongoing backers. With this latest infusion of capital, Meanwhile’s total funding amassed to date has climbed to more than $180 million, cementing its position as a uniquely capitalized entity at the intersection of traditional insurance and cryptocurrency.

According to the company, the fresh capital follows a sharp surge in demand for its Bitcoin life insurance policies outside the United States. High-net-worth individuals and families throughout Asia, Europe, and the Middle East are increasingly turning to Bitcoin as a hedge against broader macroeconomic instability and currency devaluation, driving an urgent need for sophisticated estate planning tools that accommodate digital assets.

Zac Townsend, co-founder and chief executive officer of Meanwhile, emphasized the fundamental market gap the company was created to solve. In a statement released alongside the funding news, Townsend noted that wealthy families around the world already hold substantial amounts of Bitcoin, but historically lacked a secure, regulated, and compliant mechanism to pass those assets on to subsequent generations. He added that insurance brokers approached the company because their clients kept asking for such solutions, and the latest funding round will provide the necessary runway to keep pace with that swelling demand.

The funding milestone arrives on the heels of several product expansions and regulatory achievements for the firm. In early 2026, Meanwhile launched BTC Life 1-Pay, a single-premium whole life insurance policy specifically tailored for high-net-worth clients outside the United States. This offering marked the company’s second major product line, following its initial rollout of BTC 10-Pay, a policy designed primarily to cater to US taxpayers.

Under the terms of the BTC Life 1-Pay structure, a client pays a single premium denominated in Bitcoin and in return receives a guaranteed death benefit entirely in Bitcoin for life. The policy’s cash value grows intrinsically in Bitcoin, and policyholders gain the flexibility—after the first year—to borrow up to 90 percent of the policy’s value. Crucially, these loans come with no rigid repayment schedule and are free from the threat of margin calls, offering clients unprecedented liquidity without forcing them to liquidate their underlying digital holdings.

Furthermore, these policies can be held directly by individuals, or structured through trusts and corporate entities, making them exceptionally well-suited for complex succession, estate, and legacy planning.

Since the launch of its international offerings, Meanwhile has rapidly expanded its distribution network, successfully signing 15 institutional brokers that serve wealthy families across key financial hubs such as Singapore, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates, and Switzerland. Among its strategic partners are Lioner, a prominent insurance, trust, and family office group with operations spanning Hong Kong, Singapore, and Zurich, and Apeiron Group, a leading marketplace specializing in high-net-worth life insurance solutions.

Justin Man, CEO of Apeiron Group, highlighted the shifting mindset among wealthy clientele regarding digital wealth. He noted that the market is reaching a critical turning point where high-net-worth clients are moving past the initial question of how to merely hold Bitcoin and other digital assets. Instead, they are actively seeking guidance on how to strategically plan around those assets and ultimately transfer that accumulated wealth to the next generation in a secure and orderly manner.

The commercial traction is already translating into tangible financial performance. Meanwhile reported that its net long-term underwriting income has already surpassed last year’s total and is currently on track to more than double over the course of 2026, though the privately held firm opted not to disclose specific financial figures.

Stefan Cohen, a partner at Bain Capital Crypto, praised the company’s unique operational architecture and rapid commercial validation. He remarked that Meanwhile has successfully engineered every layer of a traditional, fully regulated life insurer while building and scaling it with the agility of an artificial intelligence-enabled startup. Cohen added that the company’s impressive growth trajectory throughout the year clearly proves the viability of its business model, making them proud to participate as repeat backers.

The insurer’s primary operating entity, Meanwhile Insurance Bitcoin (Bermuda) Limited, holds a landmark Class IILT license granted by the Bermuda Monetary Authority. The company earned the regulatory nod in July 2024 following a rigorous two-year incubation period within the regulator’s specialized sandbox environment, making it the first life insurer of its kind to be fully licensed to conduct operations exclusively in Bitcoin.

Operating under this unique regulatory framework, Meanwhile maintains its entire balance sheet, operational reserves, and audited financial statements denominated natively in Bitcoin. To ensure the highest standards of security and institutional compliance, all policyholder Bitcoin is stored with highly regulated institutional custodians rather than held internally, providing clients with an additional layer of security and transparency.
