Production is officially underway for the highly anticipated third season of Netflix’s hit action-comedy-crime drama The Gentlemen, and series creator Guy Ritchie is expanding his star-studded ensemble with some legendary new faces. In a surprise casting announcement that bridges the gap between gritty British underworld crime and high fantasy, Netflix has confirmed that Elijah Wood and Orlando Bloom are joining the upcoming season alongside leading man Theo James.
The addition of Wood and Bloom marks a significant pop-culture milestone for fans of Peter Jackson’s cinematic masterpieces. Most famously recognized around the globe for their iconic portrayals of the hobbit Frodo Baggins and the elven warrior Legolas in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, the two actors are reuniting on screen for the first time in over two decades. Although both Wood and Bloom reprised their legendary roles years later in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit prequels, their respective characters appeared in separate installments of that trilogy and never shared screen time. The Gentlemen season 3 will therefore mark their first official on-screen collaboration since the sweeping conclusion of the original trilogy with 2003’s The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
They will not be the only high-profile additions joining the Netflix series. Acclaimed Scottish actor Robert Carlyle is also stepping into the world of The Gentlemen for its third outing. Carlyle, celebrated for his unforgettable performance as Francis "Begbie" in Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting, brings a deep wealth of television and film experience to the project, having previously starred in beloved fan-favorite television series such as ABC’s fantasy drama Once Upon a Time and the sci-fi adventure Stargate: Universe.

The announcement of these major casting additions comes on the heels of the release of The Gentlemen season 2, which premiered on Netflix this past September. Because production on the third season has only just begun, fans of Ritchie’s slick, aristocratic crime caper will likely have a significant wait ahead of them before the show returns to screens. Given the standard two-year production gap between the first two seasons of the series, industry trackers anticipate that The Gentlemen season 3 will likely debut in 2028.
What Lord of the Rings Actors Are Returning in The Hunt for Gollum?
The news of Middle-earth alumni crossing paths in contemporary London arrives as excitement builds around Warner Bros.’ ongoing expansion of the broader Lord of the Rings cinematic universe. The studio has officially confirmed that a brand-new live-action spinoff film titled The Hunt for Gollum is currently in active production, with franchise veteran Andy Serkis returning to not only reprise his iconic motion-capture role as the corrupted creature Gollum but also to step behind the camera as director.
The upcoming feature film will explore a specific narrative gap within the broader Middle-earth timeline, following the ranger Aragorn on a perilous secret mission to track down Gollum and unearth vital information concerning the true nature of the One Ring before it falls back into the hands of the Dark Lord.

As production ramps up for The Hunt for Gollum, Warner Bros. has confirmed that several legacy cast members will be returning to their historic roles alongside Serkis. Elijah Wood is officially slated to return once more as Frodo Baggins, bridging the cinematic generations, while Sir Ian McKellen will don the gray robes and wizard’s hat again to play the wise wizard Gandalf.
However, the production has also brought in notable new casting choices for iconic roles. The character of Aragorn will be played by Jamie Dornan, known for his work in Fifty Shades of Grey, taking over the mantle famously originated by Viggo Mortensen in the original trilogy. The star-studded ensemble for the upcoming film also features prominent actors such as Anya Taylor-Joy, Kate Winslet, and Leo Woodall.
The Hunt for Gollum is currently slated for a theatrical release on December 17, 2027. Before Tolkien enthusiasts embark on that cinematic journey, however, they will have the chance to return to Middle-earth through the small screen, with the upcoming premiere of the third season of Amazon’s high-budget fantasy series The Rings of Power, which is scheduled to debut its next season on November 11.
