Meta Unveils ‘Muse’ Personal AI Agent in Major Strategy Overhaul to Catch Industry Rivals

Meta is launching another high-stakes push to bring artificial intelligence directly to the general public with the introduction of Muse, a new personal assistant that the company says is capable of putting sophisticated AI capabilities into the hands of virtually anyone. The product launch represents the latest step in a massive, multi-billion-dollar strategy overhaul designed to revitalize Meta’s lagging position in the highly competitive artificial intelligence race, helping the social media giant catch up to established industry rivals such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.

Positioned as a comprehensive "personal AI agent," Muse is built to assist users with everyday tasks and complex projects, ranging from online shopping and sending emails to planning detailed trips. Once a user gives the assistant a goal, Meta explains that Muse can operate autonomously—opening a browser, filling out online forms, and even handling negotiations on the user’s behalf. For more lengthy or time-consuming tasks, Meta notes that Muse will continue operating in the background even after users close the mobile application. The agent will periodically return to the user if circumstances change or if it requires explicit human approval for a sensitive action, such as authorizing a financial purchase.

The new assistant is scheduled to roll out initially in the United States across iOS, Android, and the dedicated web portal muse.ai, with Meta confirming that accompanying AI glasses are "coming soon." The base service will be offered free of charge to most users, though the company has acknowledged that paid subscription tiers will be introduced "for people who want to do more." At launch, however, Meta did not specify the precise pricing structure, the exact nature of these paid plans, or outline what specific usage limits might apply to free accounts.

"Muse is a first step: an agent that takes on more of the work so people can focus on what matters to them," Meta stated in its official product announcement.

While Meta is aggressively marketing Muse as "the world’s first personal AI agent built for everyone," the software bears a striking resemblance to a rapidly expanding ecosystem of AI assistants, digital teammates, and virtual coworkers currently being rolled out by competing technology firms. Most of those rival offerings have primarily targeted corporate environments or technically inclined consumers—notably OpenAI’s ChatGPT Work, Anthropic’s Claude Cowork, Microsoft’s Copilot Tasks, SpaceXAI’s Grok Bot, and the viral open-source agent Moltbot. However, Google appears to be pursuing a similarly broad consumer audience with its recently announced Gemini Spark assistant.

Ease of use is the primary differentiator Meta is banking on to help Muse stand out in an increasingly crowded marketplace. "Anyone can use it out of the box, no technical experience required," Meta claims, emphasizing that the software features virtually "no learning curve." Communication with the agent is designed to be as straightforward as chatting with a friend, accessible directly through the dedicated Muse app or via WhatsApp, one of Meta’s flagship messaging platforms. Furthermore, the assistant is engineered to remember specific details shared by users over time—even if a detail is only mentioned once—allowing it to provide more tailored and unprompted suggestions in the future.

Alongside accessibility, Meta is placing heavy emphasis on Muse’s built-in privacy and security safeguards. Establishing consumer trust is viewed as a critical hurdle for making any AI assistant genuinely useful, as these tools inherently require access to sensitive personal information to function effectively. To address these concerns, Meta states that users can explicitly opt out of having their interactions used to train future Meta AI models—though the company has not clarified whether this privacy control is enabled by default—and can instruct Muse to completely "forget" specific details it has learned about them.

Because consumer-facing AI agents inherently require access to personal information, login credentials, passwords, and payment details, they can easily transform into a severe security and privacy nightmare if mishandled. To mitigate these risks, Muse operates within a secure virtual computer hosted in the cloud, designed to isolate and protect data away from other users’ agents. Meta reports that the base system has no direct visibility into user passwords or payment methods. Additionally, a secondary, specialized AI agent named Sentinel continuously patrols the virtual machine to ensure that no automated action taken by Muse can reach the open internet without explicit authorization.

Looking ahead, Meta says it plans to introduce a heightened level of security later this year through a "confidential" version of the virtual machine. This upgraded environment will be fully encrypted, ensuring that even Meta itself cannot access the data residing within it. Support for credential management tools like 1Password and Shop Pay is also currently in development, supplementing the fact that Muse can already process secure checkouts using Stripe’s Link infrastructure.

Powered by Meta’s proprietary in-house model known as Muse Spark, Muse is being positioned as the central pillar of the company’s long-term artificial intelligence strategy as it works to recover ground lost during years of strategic setbacks and missteps.

As a household name and social media behemoth, Meta is uniquely positioned to reach a massive audience of casual, everyday consumers who might otherwise bypass enterprise-focused AI tools. Yet the company also carries a significant amount of corporate baggage that it must overcome to win over skeptical users. From a trust perspective, Meta has just emerged from a grueling legal trial examining the psychological harms of social media on young users and has weathered numerous high-profile privacy scandals in the past, most notably the Cambridge Analytica data breach.

Its recent forays into artificial intelligence have similarly been plagued by embarrassing missteps and public relations issues. These include a "Discover" feature that inadvertently exposed private prompts, conversations, and image outputs from other users; a customer support chatbot that was exploited by hackers to take over more than 20,000 Instagram accounts; and a short-lived experiment with AI-generated clickbait news feeds that appeared to violate the company’s own content policies. The company also continues to contend with public scrutiny surrounding privacy concerns related to its wearable technology products.
