Sam Altman-Backed Bitcoin Life Insurer Meanwhile Raises $37.5M Amid Global Wealth Surge

Meanwhile, pioneering the path as the first life insurance company licensed to operate entirely in Bitcoin, has successfully raised $37.5 million in new funding from its existing roster of high-profile investors. The latest capital injection highlights the accelerating mainstream integration of digital assets into traditional wealth and estate planning, particularly among affluent demographics navigating ongoing global macroeconomic uncertainties.

The funding round was spearheaded by Bain Capital Crypto, with robust participation from a consortium of prominent venture capital firms and financial institutions, including Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures, and Morgan Creek Digital. The newly secured $37.5 million brings Meanwhile’s total lifetime funding to more than $180 million. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, a notable early backer of the venture, also participated in the round.

According to the company, the fresh capital arrives on the heels of a significant surge in international demand for its Bitcoin-denominated life insurance policies. While the company initially captured attention in domestic markets, recent growth has been propelled heavily by clients outside the United States, with wealthy families across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East increasingly turning to Bitcoin as a core component of their financial safeguarding strategies.

Zac Townsend, co-founder and CEO of Meanwhile, emphasized the unique market gap the company is filling during a time of global economic shifts.

"Wealthy families around the world already hold Bitcoin. What they haven’t had is a regulated way to pass it on," Townsend said in a public statement regarding the funding round. "Brokers came to us because their clients kept asking. This round lets us keep up with them."

The demand has materialized rapidly following strategic product expansions. In early 2026, Meanwhile rolled out BTC Life 1-Pay, a single-premium whole life insurance policy specifically tailored for high-net-worth clients operating outside the United States. This offering serves as the company’s second major product line, following the introduction of its BTC 10-Pay policy, which was originally designed to accommodate the regulatory and tax considerations of US taxpayers.

Under the mechanics of the BTC Life 1-Pay product, a client contributes a single premium denominated in Bitcoin and, in return, secures a guaranteed death benefit paid out in Bitcoin for life. The underlying value of the policy continues to grow in Bitcoin. Furthermore, policyholders are granted financial flexibility: after the first year of the policy, the owner is permitted to borrow up to 90 percent of the policy’s value without being subjected to a rigid repayment schedule or the threat of margin calls, which are common pain points in traditional crypto-backed lending markets.

These structural features make the policies uniquely suited for complex succession and estate planning. Ownership of the policies can be structured flexibly, allowing individuals, family trusts, or corporate entities to hold them, thereby bridging the gap between decentralized digital currencies and traditional wealth preservation instruments.

Since the rollout of these offerings, Meanwhile has rapidly expanded its distribution network, successfully signing 15 institutional brokers that serve wealthy families across critical financial hubs, including Singapore, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates, and Switzerland. Among its key distribution partners are Lioner, an established insurance, trust, and family office group boasting operations in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Zurich, and Apeiron Group, a specialized marketplace catering to high-net-worth life insurance buyers.

Justin Man, CEO of Apeiron Group, noted the changing sentiment among affluent investors regarding digital wealth.

"We’re reaching a turning point where more high-net-worth clients are asking not just how to hold Bitcoin and digital assets, but how to plan around them and ultimately transfer that wealth to the next generation," Man observed.

The commercial traction is translating directly into financial momentum for the insurer. Meanwhile reported that its net long-term underwriting income has already surpassed the total figures recorded for the entirety of last year and remains firmly on an upward trajectory to more than double throughout 2026, though specific financial figures were not publicly disclosed by the firm.

Stefan Cohen, a partner at Bain Capital Crypto, praised the company’s hybrid operational model and its ability to scale effectively within a strict regulatory framework.

"Meanwhile owns every layer of a regulated life insurer and builds it like an AI-enabled startup," Cohen remarked. "The growth this year proves the model, and we’re glad to back them again."

The foundational stability of the enterprise rests upon its rigorous regulatory compliance. The company’s primary operating entity, Meanwhile Insurance Bitcoin (Bermuda) Limited, operates under the historic distinction of holding the first Class IILT license ever granted by the Bermuda Monetary Authority. This regulatory milestone was achieved in July 2024 following a rigorous two-year development period spent within the financial regulator’s controlled sandbox environment.

In maintaining its strictly digital mandate, Meanwhile ensures that its entire corporate balance sheet, internal reserves, and formally audited financial statements are fully denominated in Bitcoin. To safeguard customer assets, all policyholder Bitcoin is stored securely through established, regulated institutional custodians, aligning the cutting-edge nature of cryptocurrency with the stringent security and compliance standards expected of global insurance institutions.
