Bitcoin advanced aggressively on Friday, nearing the $87,000 threshold as a wave of short liquidations swept across derivatives markets, surpassing $120 million over a 24-hour period. The leading cryptocurrency reached an intraday high of $86,857 on the Bitstamp exchange before experiencing a minor pullback to trade just below the $86,000 mark.
This robust price action marked Bitcoin’s highest valuation since late September, highlighting a significant shift in market momentum. The upward surge followed a period of intense consolidation and fluctuations in exchange order-book liquidity. For much of the week, price action had remained firmly rangebound, largely dictated by a heavy concentration of sell orders clustered around the $85,000 level. However, persistent buying pressure ultimately allowed bulls to break through that formidable barrier, according to onchain analytics provided by Glassnode.

Market observers noted that the clearance of these dense liquidity walls has fundamentally altered the short-term landscape of exchange order books. With reduced ask liquidity situated immediately above current market prices, analysts suggest the digital asset may encounter a clearer path for upward momentum. Glassnode pointed out via social media that the remaining sell orders near the previous resistance levels appeared to have been largely withdrawn by market participants, clearing the runway for further advances.
Earlier in the week, market tracking reports highlighted that more than $30 million in concentrated sell orders had materialized around the $85,700 region, acting as an immediate ceiling for bullish ambitions. Once buyers successfully absorbed this overhead supply, order-book heatmaps from CoinGlass revealed a rapid shift in liquidation exposure. A dense cluster of potential short liquidations quickly formed above the $87,300 mark, drawing leveraged traders into a classic short-squeeze dynamic as the price climbed.

Consequently, short liquidations for Bitcoin alone mounted to $122 million over the trailing 24 hours, while the broader cryptocurrency market saw total cross-crypto liquidations scale up to $210 million. This sweeping wipeout of bearish derivative positions underscores the strength of the sudden breakout, catching leveraged market participants off guard as prices challenged multi-week highs.
ETF Inflows Cool Following Record-Breaking September Momentum
Despite the sharp bullish breakout and the clearance of major overhead resistance, analysts continue to monitor institutional capital flows closely to gauge the sustainability of the current rally. The psychological and financial milestone around the $86,000 mark holds particular significance for the broader market, as it serves as the aggregate breakeven zone for investors participating through United States spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds.

In its regular weekly research publication, The Week Onchain, Glassnode emphasized that a fully sustained and reliable breakout will ultimately require confirmation from higher overall trading volume and a resurgence in robust spot ETF inflows. These complementary factors are viewed by market researchers as essential prerequisites to validate broader, long-term support for Bitcoin’s ongoing uptrend.
Daily net flows into these investment vehicles have notably cooled since late September. On September 21, the daily tally for US spot Bitcoin ETFs hit its highest watermark in nearly a year, capturing a staggering $999 million in a single day. While institutional funds continue to accumulate the underlying asset, the pace of acquisition has since moderated significantly, dropping to a small fraction of the volumes recorded during that historic peak. Industry analysts note that a return to daily inflows nearing that September magnitude would serve as the most definitive indicator of renewed, aggressive institutional demand.

Recent data compiled by Farside Investors illustrates this tempered environment. On October 1, US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded aggregate net inflows of $102.7 million. A closer examination of the individual fund data reveals that BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) commanded the lion’s share of the day’s demand, pulling in $195 million in new capital. However, concurrent outflows from several competing fund issuers weighed down the aggregate figure, resulting in a more modest net positive day for the sector as a whole.
As Bitcoin navigates the crucial liquidity zones just beneath $87,000, market participants remain focused on whether spot demand and order-book dynamics will provide the necessary fuel to sustain the breakout and challenge higher resistance levels in the weeks ahead.
