Sony Implements Strict Lottery System in Japan Amid PS5 Pro Shortages Driven by GTA 6 Anticipation

The release of Grand Theft Auto VI is still weeks away, yet the sheer magnitude of anticipation for Rockstar Games’ upcoming blockbuster is already making waves across the global gaming hardware market, triggering severe PlayStation 5 Pro shortages in Japan. While the much-anticipated title will eventually be available across multiple gaming consoles, players seeking the ultimate, high-performance Grand Theft Auto VI experience are understandably eyeing Sony’s most powerful home console yet to get the absolute most out of the open-world epic.

Faced with surging demand and limited hardware supplies, Sony has had to devise a strategy to manage inventory and ensure that consoles land in the hands of genuine players rather than automated scalpers and resellers looking to profit off the massive hype. So, what is Sony’s solution for the mounting PS5 Pro shortage in the region? The company has introduced an exclusive lottery system designed to determine precisely who is granted the privilege to purchase the high-end console.

However, entering the lottery is not as simple as logging onto a website and clicking a button. There is an extra, highly specific catch involved that sets a firm barrier to entry. The PlayStation manufacturer is requiring that consumers actively prove they have put in legitimate time playing on a PlayStation ecosystem before they can even secure an entry ticket for a chance to buy the coveted console.

To enter the official Sony Store lottery in Japan, prospective buyers must use a verified Sony account that demonstrates a clear history of engagement. Specifically, the account must show at least 60 hours of confirmed playtime on either PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 consoles between September 27, 2024, and September 27, 2026. By implementing this playtime threshold, Sony is attempting to filter out opportunistic buyers and prioritize loyal, active members of the PlayStation community who are genuinely invested in the ecosystem.

Fans who manage to meet these strict eligibility requirements are permitted to apply through the platform to purchase a single PS5 Pro unit, with the application window remaining open through October 7. Following the close of the application period, the lottery will be drawn, and successful winners will be officially notified by October 26. Those fortunate enough to win the lottery will then be able to complete their purchase, with Sony scheduling the console deliveries to arrive during the first half of November.

The timing of these logistics is hardly accidental, as it aligns directly with the frantic countdown to the autumn’s biggest entertainment launch. Grand Theft Auto VI is currently scheduled to officially hit store shelves and digital storefronts on November 19, setting up a thrilling race against time for Japanese gamers hoping to have their upgraded hardware fully installed, updated, and ready to go the moment the doors open to Rockstar’s sprawling new virtual world.
