AMD to Acquire AI Pioneer World Labs in Massive $8.2 Billion All-Stock Deal

In a landmark move that underscores the fierce race to dominate the next frontier of artificial intelligence, chipmaking giant AMD has announced that it is acquiring World Labs, the prominent AI research lab co-founded by renowned computer scientist Dr. Fei-Fei Li. Valued at approximately $8.2 billion in an all-stock transaction, the agreement represents one of the most significant strategic consolidations in the tech industry as hardware manufacturers increasingly look to vertically integrate advanced AI research and model development.

The deal is expected to close by the end of the year, pending standard regulatory approvals and closing conditions. Upon completion of the acquisition, Dr. Li will step into a pivotal leadership role at AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting directly to AMD CEO Lisa Su. Meanwhile, the talented team of researchers, engineers, and scientists at World Labs will continue to focus heavily on advancing foundational AI model research, ensuring that their pioneering scientific work remains a core driving force behind the integration.

World Labs has experienced a meteoric rise since its launch in 2024. Co-founded by Dr. Li—often celebrated across the technology industry as the "Godmother of AI" for her foundational work on ImageNet and computer vision—the startup captured the imagination of the venture capital community almost immediately. Propelled by prominent early backing from elite venture firms such as Andreessen Horowitz and Radical Ventures, World Labs achieved a staggering $1 billion valuation within just a few months of its inception, establishing itself as an elite player in the heavily competitive generative artificial intelligence landscape.

The startup quickly moved beyond theoretical research to make a tangible commercial impact. In 2025, World Labs introduced its flagship commercial offering: Marble, an innovative world-generation model designed to allow users to construct rich, interactive three-dimensional worlds from simple text prompts. While much of the broader generative AI industry has remained intensely focused on large language models (LLMs) and text-based reasoning tools, World Labs staked its long-term vision on spatial intelligence and world modeling, betting that machines capable of understanding and simulating three-dimensional environments would unlock entirely new paradigms for gaming, design, simulation, and human-computer interaction.

For Dr. Li, transitioning World Labs into the fold of a global semiconductor powerhouse represents a natural evolution of the company’s core mission. In a detailed post published on her Substack addressing the acquisition, she reflected on the journey of founding the startup and the rationale behind joining forces with AMD. Just as she knew it was time to leave her academic roots to launch a startup capable of jumpstarting foundation models beyond traditional text-based LLMs, she noted that the path forward for maximizing impact requires the scale and resources of an industry titan.

AMD is acquiring AI company World Labs in a deal worth more than $8 billion

"Just like I knew it was time to do a startup to jumpstart the work of creating foundation models beyond LLMs and achieve the most impact in AI, it’s again very clear that the right path for myself and World Labs is to continue our mission as a part of AMD," Dr. Li wrote. "Together we’re committed to keep pushing the frontier of AI to solve real problems, and doing so openly with the community and the entire ecosystem."

From AMD’s perspective, the acquisition represents a crucial strategic alignment between silicon engineering and bleeding-edge algorithmic research. As modern artificial intelligence models grow exponentially in complexity, size, and computational demands, chipmakers can no longer afford to design hardware in isolation from the software and models that will ultimately run on them. By bringing World Labs under its corporate umbrella, AMD significantly strengthens its internal capabilities to design and optimize AI hardware, software systems, and specialized infrastructure tailored precisely to the evolving needs of emerging spatial models and next-generation applications.

AMD CEO Lisa Su emphasized the critical importance of this deep synergy between hardware architecture and foundational model research. As computing platforms struggle to keep pace with the accelerating demands of modern machine learning workloads, having direct access to some of the brightest minds in AI research will provide AMD with invaluable insights into where the technology is heading next.

"Building the compute platforms for the next generation of AI requires a deep understanding of how models are evolving," Su said in an official corporate statement. "Fei-Fei and the World Labs team bring exceptional research leadership and model expertise. Together, we can use that insight to develop the hardware, software and systems that will power the next generation of AI and strengthen the open AI ecosystem."

The multi-billion-dollar transaction is part of a broader, aggressive wave of consolidation sweeping through the artificial intelligence ecosystem as dominant technology and hardware companies race to secure top-tier talent and proprietary intellectual property. Just earlier this month, graphics processing unit pioneer Nvidia announced its own blockbuster acquisition agreement, revealing plans to acquire popular AI platform and community hub Hugging Face in a transaction valued at nearly $13 billion. As capital expenditures skyrocket and competition intensifies among chip architects, cloud providers, and foundational research labs, industry boundaries are blurring rapidly, leaving hardware giants and AI innovators increasingly intertwined.
