Hideo Kojima Reveals Details Behind Sony’s Sudden Zoom Call Cancellation and Xbox Rescue

Legendary game creator Hideo Kojima has spoken candidly about his shocking split with Sony Interactive Entertainment, revealing that the global tech giant terminated their long-running partnership over a routine video call without providing any official reason for the decision. The abrupt cancellation brought an unexpected halt to years of collaboration between the acclaimed auteur and the PlayStation platform, leaving the independent developer temporarily scrambling to secure the future of his studio and its workforce.

Speaking through an interpreter in an exclusive interview with The Washington Post, Kojima admitted that his mind went completely blank with shock when the news was delivered during a June meeting. The unexpected digital summit included Kojima himself, his translator Aki Saito, and Kojima Productions’ president, Shinji Hirano. Despite the sudden and unexplained termination of what he considered a deeply established collaborative effort, the renowned developer insisted that he harbors no personal grudges against his former partner, maintaining a level-headed perspective on the unpredictable nature of the video game industry.

The abrupt severance of ties brought an end to an alliance that had defined Kojima’s career since his high-profile departure from Konami over a decade ago. Following that contentious split, Kojima established his own independent studio, Kojima Productions, and immediately forged a close relationship with Sony. This partnership birthed the studio’s debut open-world title, Death Stranding, and its upcoming sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, both of which launched as PlayStation console exclusives. Given this rich history of mutual success, the unilateral cancellation of their latest joint venture came as a complete surprise to the leadership team at Kojima Productions.

The project caught in the crossfire of this corporate pivot is Physint, an ambitious stealth-action game that had been slated for publication by Sony. The title has already garnered significant attention within the gaming community, particularly after Kojima announced that actor Bill Skarsgård would portray the game’s main character. While Kojima Productions was simultaneously developing the horror-focused project OD in collaboration with Microsoft’s Xbox division, Sony’s sudden withdrawal of financial and publishing support for Physint placed the entire independent studio in a precarious position.

"We couldn’t understand it," Kojima recounted to The Washington Post. He noted that former SIE CEO Jim Ryan had already retired, but the project had been agreed upon and greenlit by leadership as a joint endeavor. "I didn’t think Physint would be on the list of being cancelled," he added.

Reflecting on the tense moments immediately following the revelation, Kojima explained that his initial reaction was defined purely by problem-solving rather than emotional distress. Operating as an independent studio means that long-term stability relies heavily on external publishing partners to fund large-scale developments. Without warning or a financial cushion from their primary backer, the very survival of the studio hung in the balance.

"I didn’t have any anger or sadness," Kojima said when describing his immediate mental state. "I was just thinking, ‘What should I do?’ It’s a big problem for us and I couldn’t tell staff at the time… We’re an independent studio. That means if they can’t fund us, our studio could collapse."

Fortunately, the crisis was averted when Xbox stepped forward to fill the void, expanding its existing relationship with the developer to rescue and publish Physint. Speaking in a separate interview with IGN, Kojima explained that after the split went public, he approached multiple potential industry partners and received broadly positive responses. However, Xbox ultimately emerged as the ideal home for the project due to its comprehensive approach, which extended beyond simple financial backing to include critical technical resources and marketing support.

"I approached Xbox and they were great," Kojima told IGN, highlighting that their previous collaboration on the horror game OD had already established a strong working relationship. According to the creator, after he pitched the vision for Physint to Microsoft executives, their immediate reaction was overwhelmingly enthusiastic, describing it as a pitch unlike anything they had seen before. This mutual excitement paved the way for a swift agreement that secured the game’s future and ensured stability for the studio’s workforce.

Kojima was eventually able to brief his employees on the studio’s new trajectory, having successfully kept the crisis under wraps until a resolution was firmly in place. Aside from key leaders directly involved in the Physint development pipeline, the vast majority of staff members remained unaware of the ordeal until the day before Xbox was officially announced as their new publishing partner.

One of the defining factors in Kojima’s decision to partner with Xbox was the tech giant’s broader vision for the intellectual property. Rather than merely viewing the collaboration as a standard video game funding agreement, Microsoft expressed interest in exploring transmedia opportunities, including potential adaptations across film and anime. For an independent creator looking to expand the cultural footprint of his original creations, this holistic approach to IP management proved particularly compelling.

Despite the abrupt and unexplained nature of Sony’s departure, the creator of Metal Gear Solid reiterated that he holds no ill-will toward the Japanese conglomerate. While he admitted that he would have preferred earlier communication given their three-decade history within the industry, his personal affinity for the brand remains entirely intact. He noted that he has been a loyal consumer of Sony products for years, utilizing their Walkman music players and cameras in his daily life.

"I’m not fighting with Sony," Kojima told IGN, emphasizing that there is no active corporate dispute between the two entities. "We’re not in a dispute. But what I want to say is that we’ve been together for 30 years and we have this relationship. So if this was the conclusion, I would’ve wanted to hear it a little earlier… [But] I’ve always been a big Sony fan. I’ve been using a Walkman. All my cameras are Sony. So I have no bad feelings towards them."

Shortly after the transition became public knowledge, a Bloomberg report surfaced claiming that Sony’s decision to sever ties was motivated by internal concerns that Physint was missing internal milestones and tracking significantly over budget. Sources close to the situation suggested these budgetary and timeline pressures ultimately forced PlayStation’s hand.

Kojima Productions subsequently addressed these media reports through a written statement, advising the public to view the claims with a degree of skepticism. The studio reassured fans and stakeholders that the business remains in a healthy and profitable position. Furthermore, the developer emphasized that development on Physint continues smoothly under its new agreement with Xbox, while underlining that its broader relationship with PlayStation remains strong despite the cancellation of this specific project.
